I remember seeing a similar question elsewhere and the solution there was to disable Visual Effects. Try it out and see if t works out for you.

I saw a machine with the same problem yesterday. Setting System > Preferences > Appearence > Visual Effects (none) did the trick. Fresh Intrepid install with proprietary Nvidia drivers.

Thank you guys very much! This does solve the problem. However in selecting none in visual effects would disable the cube. Which Im sure you would agree is a very cool not to mention effective tool.
The version of OpenOffice I have is 3.01 OOO300m15 (Build 9379). So should I call this solved???

What system font are you using now? Try changing it to something else -
may be like Bitstream Vera Sans or UnDotum and see if it works out...
