More than 1840 rows don't display

Asked by ghsmith54

I have a spreadsheet with 16 active columns and (so far) 1500 rows where each row represents daily data (about 5 years worth of data). I want to add additional rows so I can continue to record daily data but no matter what I do (insert row, cut & paste, etc) the last row that will display is the 1840th row. The row not only doesn't display, the data in it "disappears". To verify this I did the following:

created a formula in cell a5 =sum(a1;a1835). a1 has the value 1500, a1835 has the value 500. The result in a5 is 2000.

Go to row 1810. Select 20 rows (1810-1830). Copy. Go to row 1832. Paste.

The value in a5 is 1500, the last visible row is 1840.

Gobs of memory/disk space free.

Any suggestions?

Which version of OpenOffice.org are you using? I had some weird issues with 2.4.1 that seemed to be fixed when I upgraded to 3.0.

Hi Micah,

I'm using the latest version that is part of the Ubuntu distribution, 2.4.1. I don't generally install from OpenOffice.org directly, I just install the Ubuntu distros as they become available and use the package manager notifications to stay current. I'll try installing 3.0 and see if that helps.

Try using this ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive/ppa

Instructions are on the page. It has up to date openoffice packages for
Hardy and Intrepid. It also provides updates.

I've installed the latest version of OpenOffice (3.01, build 9379) and get exactly the same behavior.

I'm sorry, I'm out of ideas. If no one else responds within a day, I
would suggest moving this to a bug for the openoffice.org packages.
You'll have to add the appropriate information for submitting a bug to
Ubuntu.

Good luck,
Micah

OK, I've not gotten a response so I'll report it as a bug.

Thanks for your help.

hi,
i suggest to sellect all (use ctrl+A) and copy everything to a new spreadsheet.
i tried that out just 2 minutes ago, and all works fine then.

I have not the sligthest idea what went wrong with your sheet, but the above should work...

This did indeed work. As to your earlier question as to how I "managed" to get the rows to disappear, I've obviously no idea. The spreadsheet was created over a period of several years as follows:

- Initially started as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet on windows
- Dumped to a c,v file
- Imported into calc
- This was done in early 2007
- I created a blank "year" i.e., one with only the dates but no other data
- Each new year, I'd copy the blank year and paste it beginning in the row after the previous year
- I did this for 2008 and used the spreadsheet successfully.
- Sometime toward the end of 2008 to create the template for 2009. I noticed after doing this that the load/save time was dramatically slower
- I noticed sometime after that that the rows below 1840 didn't display

Should you wish to try to recreate the process, I still have the original c,v file. I'm sure there are other things I did to the spreadsheet over time, after all I used it on a daily basis for more than 2 years so the steps above are no doubt incomplete.

Thanks for your help.
