open office auto correct error

Asked by Ivan

Hi,
I was wondering if you could help with what may be a trivial problem with OO3 under Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid?
I updated from 2.4 which came as default by editing gksudo gedit... sources.list with
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main
and the same again with the deb-src on a second line.
Did sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Worked fine on my desktop but on my notebook all words in the writer are red underlined although the language is set to English(US). Somehow the auto correct feature seems to be muddled up.
Any ideas?

Ivan
PS why ever did I use windows for so many year!

Formatting is checked and standard is checked, nothing else. I cannot see the underlining you mention.

downgrade back to 2+

Ivan (ivanslade) said :

Yes, I could downgrade back to 2+and I will try that but that would not solve the problem and curiously now on my desktop machine, which was working perfectly well with OO3, I am getting the same red underlining as I am typing this message directly in to this response box. It is underlining about 95% of the words ("95%" not underlined, nor "I" or "downgrade back" and a few others), although it is not replicating the gibberish reported in my last post. It would appear therefore that it is not restricted to open office 3. I have just tried Kword and that seems to be OK. As windows user my initial response was a virus, could this be the case?

Coming from windows has often a preemptive reflex.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Linuxvirus

Official Ubuntu packages installed via package manager are signed and secure.
No virus there if not invited by you through other ways of installation.

You may find some corrections for OpenOffice in their documentation

"Coming from windows has often a preemptive reflex" etc
Yes I can understand that and I as I kind of implied I think this is the best platform there is especially coming from a command line CPM / DOS background years ago and 'having' to use windows later on.
I think I know a part of the problem viz:
I installed Ubuntu from a German disk although using the English setup.
I typed the word in this box 'mit' (=with) and the spell check was OK then I typed 'another' and it was underlined.
So I conjecture that the installation still has a german kernal. How I get around that I do not no any thoughts.
Why however when I type 'a' and the scr is 'aaaaaa' I do not understand.
I am still on the notebook, in which I am typing now, have the problem with OO3 (which is far better than 2.4)
On my desktop there is no problem.
It is odd and any comments are helpful

Have a look under Tools> Options> Language settings make sure english is selected.

Yep, settings should be English and of course language packages for the used version.
You may check in Synaptic if all necessary packages are installed, e.g.
openoffice.org-I10n-en-us

Another option, because of installing version 3, reinstalling 2.4, however back and forth,
rename the folder .openoffice.org2 (hidden in your home directory), to generate new configuration files
e.g.
.openoffice.org2.broken
and restart openoffice

To check error outputs, you may start OpenOffice in a terminal, read .xession-errors or Xorg.0.log

The 'aaaaaa' could have something to do with keyboard recognition. In Intrepid this task is related now to HAL-policy, but some strings will be converted from xorg.conf, but this isn't trivial to check and there is at date no english tutorial available.
However if, as you said, the PC is ok, you could compare the lines of device section for keyboard options in files like xorg.conf and /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy
or if available compare the backup file of xorg.conf with the new one,
or it might be still possible in Intrepid to config keyboard settings with

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Example in English from hal-policy file
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/tree/config/x11-input.fdi

PLEASE read the end of this note first.
Very many thanks for the responses. I
think that I have located the problem(s).
The original language recognition
problem was, I believe, caused by the installation with

sudo apt-get update && sudo
apt-get dist-upgrade.
I have repartitioned and reinstalled
Ubuntu using an ISO from the official site.
Perhaps I should have investigated
further as suggested but I am pleased with the result for I
discovered the following:
At the end of the installation one
gets:

WARNING: The following packages cannot
be authenticated!

  uno-libs3 ure openoffice.org-calc
openoffice.org-impress openoffice.org-draw

  openoffice.org-math
openoffice.org-l10n-common openoffice.org-gnome

  openoffice.org-gtk
openoffice.org-writer openoffice.org-l10n-en-za

  openoffice.org-core
openoffice.org-l10n-en-gb python-uno

  openoffice.org-style-human
openoffice.org-common ttf-opensymbol

  openoffice.org-base-core
openoffice.org-emailmerge openoffice.org-help-en-gb

  openoffice.org-help-en-us
openoffice.org-java-common

Install these packages without
verification [y/N]? n

E: Some packages could not be
authenticated

As you can see I did not
install those packages.

For if you look at the language file
being installed then it is South African - openoffice.org-l10n-en-za
.
As I wrote before it accepted German
words and I presume that is because some South African words are
similar to Dutch.

Obviously the upgrade has taken over
the English package of version 2.4 I suspect.
All is working......... – funny as I
wrote that the cursor sprung up to another part of the text just as I
was going to write “working well”.
is maybe a hardware keyboard MUX
problem or related to the HP 510 problem reported here before

http://arewold.wordpress.com/2007/05/26/installing-ubuntu-704-on-a-hp-510-laptop-computer/
although he was able to solve his
problem after installing under version 7.04.
I will carry on and report any further
developments but if I am correct with the SA language installation
then I am surprised this has not been noticed before especially as I
thought that my installation method was fairly standard.
Best wishes
Ivan

HELP AGAIN – I was just finishing and
the keyboard would not work and I just managed to save this file
before it tried to shut down giving me 30 secs to login and then to
enter my password.
I quickly installed a usb keyboard but
the HP 510 is know responding to its own keyboard as well.
Is this a hardware based before I throw
the HP 510 into the trash? Or is it software???

I think that it is worth mentioning that I am now using a brand new just out of the  box HP510 and have simply swapped out the hard drive and I still keyboard or mouse problems in OO3
Just then as i was typing a space here in Yahoo it kept repeating the space as it does words as t              his.
Weird.

As I said this isn't trivial, you may do a research on HP510 on ubuntuforums.org, open a new question concerncing this issue and also test settings in system -> preferences -> keyboard, it includes e.g. how to repeat a key stroke.
