Neither OOo word processor nor Abiword work with my newly installe Ubuntu 8.10

Asked by Robert Demoret

After downloading and installing 8.10 I could not get OO.o word processor to either display a file document or allow me to type a new one. The normal OO.o screen came up but nothing worked. I completely removed and reinstalled OO.o but no joy. I removed it again and installed Abiword. Same problem. Does not display a file document. At times I see one or more horizontal lines in color. Strangely though if I pull the slide bar down I see quick flashes of 2 or 3 line of typing which immediately disappear. When I type letters the cursor moves but nothing shows on my screen. I'm no geek and have no idea of where to start to fix this problem Can anyone help me. Robdemo

First please be sure your system is fully updated/upgraded with no pending packages or errors:

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(when the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get --reinstall --purge install openoffice.org
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

Then reboot the system... open a terminal and type:

openoffice.org

Report any errors here...

Hope this helps

Abort.
bob@bob-desktop:~$ openoffice.org
bash: openoffice.org: command not found

There were several sets of installation sequences , some of which noted files to remove but ended as shown above. Memory is not an issue as I have 6.8GB total available, 50% RAM and 90+% swap. What should I do now?

Partial fix - Can now read documents and get typing on OO.0 word processor butstill get no top tool bar- just dashes where words like"File" should be. When I click on the dash where "File" normally is I get a drop down menu but also shows only dashes. This is same as I had before on either OO.o or Abiword.

You must not get Abort when you answer to the question...

Please do it again... but when the system ask you

"Do you want to continue [Y/n]?"

simply press enter the system take the upper letter [Y/n] as default answer so you not need to answer "y"

Please try...

I had the exactly the same problem. Do you use a Nvidia card? Because, I solved it when I removed the nvidia-glx-96-dev.

I have an nvdia Geforce 2 MX graphics card. However, OO.o word processoer, et al, worked great with it on earlier versions of Ubuntu. The last was Hardy. Something has change with Intrepid as the problem only started after I installed it. I guess it could be some conflict with the nvidia card but I would rather go back to Hardy, if possible, rather than change cards. Is there any other solution for Intrepid?

It could just be a full disc. I often find i'm using a small old disc that i have filled up with Voyager Episodes and stuff.

Try opening your Documents folder from the Places menu and look at the bottom to see how much Free Space you have left on your drive. Do you have more than 238Mb free? (I know i dont or else i would be downloading something) ;)

Good luck and have fun

Tom
