how to count rows on worksheets

Asked by John

I want openoffice.org to tell me automatically how many rows I've highlighted when I scroll down a worksheet. In Excel, the number of rows you've highlighted appears on the left hand side so you don't have the manually count the rows yourself or subtract one row number from another. The number changes automatically as you scroll down.

How do you accomplish this in openoffice.org? I've attempted it through every plausible drop-down menu choice, but to no avail.

Thanks

In the bottom right corner of the OpenOffice spreadsheet window (the right side of the status bar), you should see an area with the word "Sum" written in it. If you have multiple rows highlighted and they contain numbers, you should see the sum of those rows. Right click in that area and select "Count" from the resulting popup menu. You will now see how many rows there are in your selection.

Unfortunately I don't know how to display multiple items on there, you can only see one at a time it would seem. Let me know if you figure that one out. :)

Hi Rouben

Thanks very much for your advice! It worked very well, and I really
appreciate it. I'm not sure what you mean by your question about "how
to display multiple items on there" I'm new to ubuntu, so I probably
won't be much help to you on it, but feel free if you want to e-mail me
with a more detailed description.

Hi John,

First of all, let me welcome you to Ubuntu and the amazing world of open source software! :) I'm glad I was able to help you answer your question.

When I said "display multiple items" I meant displaying more than just the number of rows you've selected at once. For example, being able to display both the number of rows selected *and* the average of the values in those rows all at the same time. Not really important, but a nice to have I guess. Perhaps I'll suggest that feature to the openoffice.org developers.

By the way, if you are happy with my answer, please mark this question as "solved". Thank you. :)
