In Writer, go to View, Toolbars and tick "Formatting".

The "Highlighting" icon is to the right.

If the Highlight icon is not there, click on the very last button of the Formatting bar to access "Visible Buttons" and tick "Highlighting".

"... but i see the icon on this e-mail but not in office work!" - what does this mean?

Strangely, "Highlighting" is not found in the "Help" index for Open Office Writer but it is found when you type "highlighting" into the "Find" search bar in OO Help.

Are you using Open Office 2.4.1 ?

The procedure outlined above and repeated below is correct:
In Writer, go to View, Toolbars and tick "Formatting" (this will add the "Formatting Toolbar" to your screen). The "Highlighting" icon is to the right. If the Highlighting icon is not there, click on the very last button of the Formatting toolbar to access "Visible Buttons" and tick "Highlighting" (it is the next item after Font Colour).

A slightly less elegant way using the menu's at the top in Writer would be to use the
Format menu (5th menu along - File Edit View Insert Format)
choose
    Character
to make a pop-up box appear. Now click the last tab which says
    Background
and pick a colour :)

Good luck and welcome to linux :)

If you are still having trouble with this then please post it as a new question. Only the most recent questions tend to get looked at so posting/reposting a question just before america arrives online gives the best chance of getting a good few answers.
