Hi Lynne

Or you could ask your question here. I will generally try to answer questions about using the data base (Base)

I need to use 1 data base (RA001 ) to remove duplicates from a second data base ( RE001) and then use the second one for a mail list . . I ask this at the oooforum.org and never got an answer or to date I have not had an answer . .

Ok, I need to know a bit more about the structure of these data bases. For instance, are you just talking of two single tables of data? If so, are the in the same data base?

And as for the removal of duplicates, do you mean removing from RE001 any records that are in RA001?

Tony

PS I'm in the UK and, as it is late, I'm off to bed now :-)

TWO separate data bases downloaded from the Realestate peoples site ! And removing the duplicates from RE00001 using RA00001 . . He is going after a certain group of the houses to sell . .

What he does not know is that soon we have a major crash coming and it is less than 5 months from now Greece Spain and 2 or 3 more will sort of crash taking the rest of the world with them . . The funny money printed by the Fed is going to spin crash and burn . . Can't print the way out of a world depression . .

OK, Lynne, we have two data bases. Tell me:

What sort of databases are they? Access, OpenOffice Base (HSQLDB) or perhaps just spreadsheets/text

In each database, is there more than one table of data?

What data items are in the data?

I need all this sort of information before I can help you.

He downloads them and the come out as CSV or and you have to click on the file to make it open Open Office calc
Each file is 126 fields ( columns ) long and has 400 names or more page . .to early morning to think LOL
It is based on maybe 2 fields a number and a letter in widely separated cells Column A ( number ) and Column R ( letter )
Last column is like DE
It has names addresses phone numbers status location seller and on for 126 columns

OK, so we have two CSV files to start with, so

Do they both have the same 126 fields?

In what way do they relate together, that will enable us to remove duplicates from RE00001 using RA00001?

Are you saying that you really want to combine that data in the files, but some records are the same in both files and you only want one copy of those records in the combined file?

Would it be easier for you to send me these two CSV files? If you click on my name at the top of this message, you will see my email address.

Hi Lynne

Thank you for the file you emailed me. To be able to work out a solution to your problem I need the second file.

Also I asked if you are saying that you really want to combine that data in the files, but some records are the same in both files and you only want one copy of those records in the combined file? Please answer this question as I may be able to give you a simpler method, if this is true.

Hello lynne,

What you are asking about is creating a result set - Tony is asking you if that result set should include records from both files or just the one. He is not talking about altering either table.

No it is the "RA" file/data base is used to check against the "RE: file/data base and remove duplicates in the "RE" file/data base . . After that the "RE" file /data base gets used for a mailing thing to send out post cards to a select group of the ones in the RE file/data base . . The "RA" file just gets deleted as once it used he will have to download the next one and the next "RE" file/data base for doing it again . . Oh yeah I get to save the mailing file and add a column for knowing when and what was sent out to whom and what date means a second column to add for a date
This is as simple as I can make from what Thomas is telling me he wants done with the information . .
Time for another cup of coffee and it is only 09:11 AM ! Also time for my vitamins . .

So, just to get this right, you want me to remove any records from the RE file which are also present in the RA file with the same 'List Number' (in col. A) AND 'Status' (in col. R).

I won't actually change the RE file, but create a new file, lets call it REX.

Is that what you want?

*That sounds about right and as long as I save it in the same format so
Thomas does not have to think about how to open it and it has the
information he wants
*

*So how do I do this and make this file REX ? as I can save it in same
format

That's what I have to work out for you!

I have worked out a solution, but I cannot fully test it. That is because there are no records in the RE file you sent me that have the same 'List Number' and 'Status' as any of the records in the RA file.

I have done my own test by copying my some records from the RA file you sent me into the RE file. So I will send you what I have with some instructions on how to use it.

By the way, if you are still using OpenOffice.org, then you are probably using a much older version of Ubuntu that I am using. I am using Ubuntu 12.04 with LibreOffice. This shouldn't matter, but if you do have any problems with my instructions. do ask for clarification.

You will need the OpenOffice database module (called Base) installed. If you don't have it installed, you can install it from the Software Centre. Just search for 'Base'.

Yeah I know It was done before I got it and so I had no way to test it . . I am using the 11.10 with mint mate installed so as to be able to have Gnome Classic desktop I have not gone to 12.04 yet I dislike the floating Icons and it takes another 2 clicks to open and use a program I counted them

*I used the Synpatic software manager and did a quick search and added
base to the mix Downloaded about 4 small items Libreoffice "Base Core"
was already there Oh yeah I added the rest of the items mysql and
report writer and another one as I expect Thomas will want reports of
some kind . .so it is all installed now !

Can you help with this problem?
