How to program own shortcut for special characters

Asked by Susan

In Word, I can choose my own shortcut for a special character I use a lot, e.g. Ctrl+ - for an emdash, or Ctrl + e for the euro sign. Is this not possible in Openoffice?

Hi,
There might be a simpler awnser, but this is the only solution i know of:
In short: create a macro and bind it to your key...

Create a macro:
tools > macro > record, and enter your special character. Press: "stop recording", and choose a name for the macro and save it in the user library ("My Macros").

Now assign the macro to a shortcutkey:
view > toolbar > customize > keyboard, and choose a shortcutkey. (Be sure the shortcut is not already in use by some other function)
then choose the catogory (OpenOffice.org macros) > user > and look for the macro you just created.
Then (do not forget) click "modify" and "ok" and all should work well...

let me know if you still have problems....
succes

Excellent GercoKees. Worked like a charm. Now the only limitation is the number of available shortcut keys. There are quite a few, but it still is a weakness of OpenOffice compared to Word, where you can make up your own shortcut key. However, for the moment it works fine.

Hi (for the record?)
Working from a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.
I had to install a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in order to activate Macros in Office.org Word Processor.
Did through Add-Remove and installed the Oo Office Suite (having to do this puzzled me: I was already working with Open Office and that is why I was interested in shortcut key stroke for insert special caracters (?)).
This last install installed Open Office Writer.
Then I followed the above procedure and it worked.
Thank you.

Thanks! I had to do the same as Poet but now it works fine. Note to Susan: If some of the "taken" keys are unlikely to be used, you can reassign them - just select them and click "Modify" and they are re-assigned. I've assigned Ctrl+1 through Ctrl+9 to Spanish accentuated characters and punctuation, e.g. upside-down ?, and it works perfectly.
