how can i disable AutoFormat?

Asked by michael combs

typing in Open Office is driving me nuts!! why can't it just leave me the f897623 alone and let me format my own document. i have set the line spacing 14 times, and it continually reverts to single spacing. every time i hit enter to go down to next line to start a line it assumes i want to go to bullets. if i use the arrow to go down, it freezes and won't let me go down to next line.
very user-unfriendly. needs english -speakers to translate. those able to get inside the command text boxes can use this stuff, but those of us who came later to computers or who just want to write documents and not hours using these types of crises management tools... i like the idea of ubuntu, but it's very frustrating.

To disable AutoFormat, simply uncheck Format > AutoFormat > While Typing.

Actually it may be Format > AutoCorrect > While Typing.

i did look under format, and don't have an autoformat to uncheck. i have
spent some time trying to solve this myself before i go crying for help. i
searched through the answers. i havfe found that by typing shift + enter
after every bloody line i can evade it. but waht a hassle! otherwise, a
bullet bos appears, my font shrinks, a big indent appears, and every time i
try to go to the next line, it happens again. also, it takes off the 1 1/2
spacing and returns it to one line. quite burdensone.

You may also want to set a style for your paragraph text, instead of
allowing the defaults and editing them on the fly.
When I was writing a lot of APA format, I set an apa-text, spa-header1
through apa header4, And so on. Then I saved my document as apa-normal and
when I needed apa, I started from there.

Hi Michael

When you hit Enter you are starting a new paragraph. The new paragraph has a style which is determined by the 'Next Style' property of the previous paragraph. If you do not define and use your own style (or modify the Default style) then the Next Style will normally be the standard Default style.

If you have a general style of layout and writing, you can always modify the Default style to what you want and then that is what you will always get as the Next Style will always be Default.

Now, there is a trick you can do to modify the Default style 'on the fly'. Use F11 to open Styles and Formatting, right click on Default and click Modify. Make sure you are on the Organiser tab and you will see a check box called AutoUpdate. This is described in Help thus:

"Updates the style when you apply direct formatting to a paragraph using this style in your document. The formatting of all paragraphs using this style is automatically updated."

It might be what you want, so try it out.

There is a lot more about using styles in Help and in the OpenOffice documentation at

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOo3_User_Guides

Hope that helps.

Tony
