how to create business cards for a Linux Operating System

Asked by Chandra Hauptman

I would like to create business cards (10 per page) using Avery card stock paper. I used to be able to do this in Windows, using Microsoft software, but now have a Linux operating system, with open office software.

When I tried to open up my "Microsoft formatted business card file", I was not able to do so.

I would appreciate a VERY simple explanation, that will walk, a "Luddite" like me, through the steps I will have to take to create this template.

And I also want to know how to access various design options for the cards such as color, font and style.

Thank you.

Chandra

From the help menu in writer.

Designing Business Cards Through a Dialog
Choose File - New - Business Cards to open the Business Cards dialog, which allows you to choose how your business cards will look.
Designing Labels and Business Cards
You can design both labels and business cards through the Labels dialog.
1. Choose File - New - Labels to open the Labels dialog.
2. On the Labels tab, under Format, define the label format.
LibreOffice Writer contains many formats of commercially available sheets for labels, badges, and business cards. You can also add other, user-defined formats.
3. On the Labels tab, under Inscription, you can choose what you want written on the labels.
This often involves database fields, so that the labels can be printed with varying content, when sending "Form Letters" for example. It is also possible to have the same text printed on every label.
Use the Database and Table list boxes to select the database and table from which the data fields are obtained. Click on the arrow button to transfer the selected data field into the inscription area. Press Enter to insert a line break. You can also enter spaces and any other fixed text.
On the Format tab you can define your own label formats, not covered by the predefined formats. To do this, select "User" from the Type list box. On the Options tab, you can specify whether all labels or only certain ones are to be created.
4. On the Options tab page, make sure that the Synchronize contents box is selected. If this is selected, a label only has to be entered (on the top left label) and edited once.
5. As soon as you click on New Document, you will see a small window with the Synchronize Labels button. Enter the first label. When you click on the Synchronize Labels button, the current individual label is copied to all the other labels on the sheet.
6. Click on New Document to create a new document with the settings you have entered.

i do not understand; i've tried in vain to use the instructions on this page. i used to be able to print my own cards using open office. i don't want to print only 10 per page; that is too much waste. 12 per page leaves only a tiny bit of waste when i print them on card stock and then slice them off.
i still have my old template, but a few things have changed and i need to update the info. the old template was so very easy, and had scads of choices for templates. i hardly knew anything about using a computer back then, years ago, and yet could easily use it. now, since accepting each new update as it's offered, i've tried over a dozen times without success, and haven't had cards for over a year now.

Hi Michael

Go to the Help and search for Rotating Text for details.

The general principle is to create a Text box, put some text in it, then rotate the box itself and the text is rotated with it.

so what i did was go into format, set page as landscape, then set columns & rows by inserting a table, and printed what i wanted within the cell. then i pasted the text into other12, printed it out and used it at copy shop to print out however copies i wanted on card stock, then use copy shop's slicer to cut em up a few pages at a time, result: business cards for less than a penny each.

So did you try File > New > Business Cards or File > New > Labels?

These handle the columns and rows for you and have a Synchronise option which means any change you make to the top left cell can by cloned into all the other cells.

Anyway, do you have an outstanding problem you need help with, or is all OK now?

no' i will try that. i've managed to cobble a solution together, thx. i
hadn't labeled it " solved" because it wasnt' my problem; i was
piggybacking ont someone elses, which ws labeld "answered." it seemed like
that was at a place of resolution; but if you wan't i'll go try to change
the status to "solved." originated with someone else though.
    thx,

I will forgive you for piggybacking if you can mark it as Solved 😉. But it may be that only the original poster can do that.
