OpenOffice Spreadsheet will not paste from a webpage

Asked by Jane Lenz

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 from liveCD. I am having trouble with pasting a web page (spread sheet type) into OOo 3.2 spread sheet. I get the first lline and then everything else locks up. Marked for reinstall but I still cannot get my pages to paste. I have been using 2.4 (Ubuntu 8.04) for bookkeeping and ordering on line. If I hightlight the section of the web page I want and copy; then I have tried pasting with "Paste", "Paste Special" ( HTML and Unformated Text) with no luck. Previously I was able to use the Paste Special - Unformated text and it fit right into the spreadsheet. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you. Jane

Hi Jane

Is it possible for you to tell us the web page that you are copying from? And exactly what part of that web page?

Hi again

I have just copied and pasted transactions from my on-line banking web page with no difficulty at all. Using ordinary Paste and both Paste Special options. So it must be a problem with the format of the data you are pasting and not Web Page to OOo pasting per se.

I am copying from a food co-op order page (a page with about 100 lines on it).    They have had, in the past 10 years, programs based on DOS and Windows   (Frankenstein Software !!) until they opened the new web page a few years ago.  Since opened, there are still problems; some of the items I need to copy are from Reports in  Excel and do not always come out the way they should.  I will try and paste the page into this email.  ... No luck.  Tried to paste it into Gmail also.  Same results.  They may have made some changes in their software (again) and not allowing us to copy.  I will contact them and find out.

You are probably right about it being their software.  Thanks for the help.  Jane

Hi Jane

What I was suggesting is you give us a link or URL for the page, providing, of course, it is not private or requiring a login.

I have, myself, come across pages that you cannot copy and paste from. In that particular case it was bound to be for security reasons. But that did not paste anything at all. You suggested that something pasted, but not in a reasonable format.

as tony said, we can't help you if you don't provide the page you're copying from. seeing that it's a co-op food ordering page, it shouldn't be a restricted webpage that's only available to certain people.

my guess is that they're using a generator program to generate the contents that has embedded special characters at the end of the line that is locking up your spreadsheet.

oh. if you're not inclined to share your exotic taste, you can try to figure out what's happening with the webpage by pasting it into writer or gedit.

The boys (and girls if there are any... have not dealt with any)  at Launchpad are the greatest.  I have checked other sites on the internet with no answers.  I do believe you have hit the nail on the head about having code at the end of the line, locking up OOo.  I do the ordering for a local food co-op and the site for United Natural Foods is password protected.  I sent an email to UNFI this morning asking if they changed anything ??   In the meantime, I have pasted what I copied into Text Editor but had to move some of the material as  the columns as all did not line up.  I did try pasting into OOo Word Processor but it came out better in Text Editor.

Let's call this problem answered.  Thanks again.  Jane
