embedded flash animations won't play in powerpoint slides

Asked by pakguru

I am running Karmic 9.10 and trying to play a Physics powerpoint presentation (29 slides) that contains embedded Macromedia Flash Player animations on some of the slides, but the animations will not run. The rest of the ppt runs fine in both OpenOffice (impress) and Powerpoint Presentation in Wine. I have AdobeFlashplayer 10 and Swfdec installed. Advice needed please.

Dear Launchpad Janitor,

I would like to keep my question open. The status of the problem has not changed since I first posted the question 15 days ago. The only personal communications I have had from Launchpad during this time have been two emails: from Curtis Hovey and Eliah Kagan ...informing me that the status of my question had changed. I have had no 'messages' with advice, nor requests for further information from any other individuals, including the 119 'also notified' launchpad members. I can only assume that the problem is difficult to resolve.

Kind regards,

Graham

Launchpad Questions expire automatically after they are inactive for a certain time; now that you have posted a new reply, the status of your question has gone back from Expired to Open, which I presume is what you want.

It's possible that this problem is easy to resolve, but I certainly don't know how. Furthermore, it might also be *impossible* to resolve, at least with OpenOffice.org Impress. I presume you've searched the web as well as posting here--do you have any information as to whether or not OpenOffice.org Impress is capable of playing embedded flash animations?

If Microsoft PowerPoint works in Wine, and you have Adobe Flash for Windows installed via Wine, then theoretically there's no reason it shouldn't work. You did install the *Windows* version of Adobe Flash Player, right? (You can also have a native Linux version installed...just not multiple native Linux versions.)

Thanks for your reply. I apologise for my delay in responding. I posted the original question when I was out in rural Indonesia. My laptop internet access there was via my Nokia N73 handphone and the connection was very, very slow, intermittent and expensive, so I decided to wait until I was back in the UK and follow up the problem on my faster, home broadband connection. I am now back in UK and can follow up the issue a lot easier and a lot quicker.
With regard to your questions... I have no information on whether Impress can play embedded flash animations...I just assumed it could play ppt's just like they play in Windows. I have downloaded Adobe Flash Player 10.1 for Windows but the animations will still not play, neither in Wine nor Powerpoint Player. I also have a desktop PC, running Win XP SP3 and it plays the same ppt presentation and slide animations fine in Powerpoint... so there would seem to no problem with the ppt file. The animations just will not play in Ubuntu.

We could continue trying to get this to work, but if you have a copy of Windows that you can install in a virtual machine (for example, with VMware or VirtualBox), that might be your best solution.

Animated smileys should always animate, at least in pidgin-webkit there is no preference for it. I can't check this myself right now since I don't have all the necessary software to do it. Learn more about it here https://animekung.com/

Can you help with this problem?
