Depends on how importnatnt it is, and recovery is only possible, not guranteed. If that physical disk area happens to have been overwritten, then its gone.

If it is very important, then stop using that disk; run a liveCD and run a low level data recovery scan. Post back if you would like more info on this.

Hi, well it's actually my partner who did this and I would love to get it back for her. Its thesis related, so important. Can you direct me to info on the liveCD? Thanks.

OK, you can use tools such as foremost to do a low level recovery -- but the process is very time consuming, and not guaranteed to work.

LiveCD:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

Recovery procedure:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/15761/recover-dataa-like-a-forensics-expert-using-an-ubuntu-live-cd/

If you are serious about the recovery, I recommend you do NOT use that computer until you get a chance to boot it off the liveCD, so the disk will not be written to. Just shut it down, and leave it.

Can you help with this problem?
