Webcam driver not working for ubuntu 24.04

Asked by Alejandro Guerrero

Hello Dear all,

I was so excited when the new ubuntu version popped up in my screen notifying me that the new Ubuntu 24.04 was finally released,

but my excitement vanished after I realized my web cam is not working properly anymore,

Please let me know if you plan to update this package or what other steps can I follow in order for me to have my webcam back and working.

I have a DELL One XPS 9320 and it took me some hours to have the webcam working on ubuntu 23.04,

This is rather urgent for me since It's my work computer and I need to show up my face in the work meetings,

Hi Alejandro,

I understand your frustration. First, try updating your system to see if any fixes have been released since the initial 24.04 release. If that doesn't work, check the Ubuntu forums or Dell's support website for any known issues or updated drivers specifically for your webcam model. You may also want to try installing a generic webcam driver if one exists. If all else fails, consider reaching out to Ubuntu's support channels for further assistance. Good luck!

Open Terminal [ctl+alt+t]:
sudo snap install cheese
After the installation.
sudo reboot

Cheese uses your webcam to take photos and videos.

device,

but I don't need an app, the driver is the problem,

cheese opens up but says no device found,

the driver is the problem, I also installed your app and it is crashing

I do not see any webcam in the listing.

Do you still have an older kernel installed that you can boot into from the grub menu and does the webcam work then?

If you just did the release upgrade, then you should still have an older kernel version installed.

What is the version of the command
ls -l /boot

Are you able to bring up the grub menu by hitting the left shift key early during boot?
By selecting advanced mode, you should then be able to select an older version of the kernel. Does the webcam work then?
Does the
sudo lsusb
command show the same output as the newer kernel, or do you have an additional entry (which might be the webcam)?

I am not able to access the grub boot menu,

Is there a command to load or boot ubuntu with an older version of the
kernel?

I was surprised to check that sudo apt install grub2

told me I didn't have grub installed....

This is an integrated camera,

But now I have another issue,

I tried to follow some other posts,

And I screwed up the wifi,

I tried to load the support for ipu6 dkms

But now it's displaying an error saying:

Module build for kernel 6.8.0-32 generic was skipped since the kernel
headers for this kernel do not seem to be installed

1. "since the kernel headers for this kernel do not seem to be installed"

What output do you receive for the command

dpkg -l | grep -E ' linux-[him]'

The command
sudo apt install linux-headers-generic
may help.

2. You have still the 6.5.0 kernel installed.
I suggest that you reboot, hit the left shift (or eventually escape) keys repeatedly early during the boot process to bring up the grub menu, then select advanced mode and then select the 6.5.0 kernel.

If you are unable to bring up the grub menu this way, you can modify the grub configuration that the menu is always shown (by editing /etc/default/grub)

Connect your computer to the router with a network cable, wait half a minute, open a terminal window and issue the command

ping -c 3 8.8.8.8

What output do you get, success, or 100% loss?

and the same for

Hi,

I am also having this problem. Camera not found on my Dell Precision 5480. Not after upgrade, but I installed Ubuntu 24.04 directly. All packages are freshly updated.

I tried installing and booting into OEM kernel (sudo apt install linux-image-oem-24.04 linux-headers-oem-24.04) but it made no difference.

Commands and outputs:

uname -a

Linux ester 6.8.0-1006-oem #6-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri May 10 15:39:04 UTC 2024 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Hello again,

I put back ubuntu 23.04 into my computer and the webcam works fine, I also got ubuntu 23.10 upgrade and it's still working fine,

but I presume whenever I decide to upgrade to ubuntu 24.04, the camera will stop working, I don't really want to spend more time

installing things that don't work, Do you have any idea when the tentacool-meta package will be available for ubuntu 24.04?

Can you help with this problem?
