Asked by hardik juneja on 2013-01-09

hi

i had got into a serious problem while solving my "the system is running in low graphics mode" using this

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nv/+question/214231 link .

this guy and i have almost same nvidia card mine is just bit more newer , so when i was on step #13 i completed it and rebooted my computer and my screen resolution got shrinked while my problem has not solved instead i have lost my unity and all can see is a blank screen with only my destop icon and shrunken screen in center. i get unity back when i remove the nvidia-current package

plz i m really stuck here. help me this is really urgent as i really want to use ubuntu

right now i am on windows

#my actual problem was that when i boot ubuntu i get a screen saying : "The system is running in low graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself." and i cant login

thanks in advance

You have an Intel GPU and an Nvidia GPU (hybrid/Optimus configuration). For the correct way to install drivers and use the nvidia card, see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee

Run below command . BE AWARE that below command is ONE command . If appears like TWO LINES , copy-paste both lines as ONE command to your terminal.

sudo sed 's/deb http:\/\/www.charlesproxy.com\/packages\/apt\/ charles-proxy main//' -i /etc/apt/sources.list

Then run reboot your system and then run below commands one by one.

sudo apt-get --purge autoremove
sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-settings
sudo nvidia-xconfig

Reboot one more time...
and then run below commands

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia linux-headers-generic

And reboot one more time.

SORRY for multiple reboots , but I want to be sure that no other program runs when you apply above commands.

Thanks

@NikTh: I don't think the user should run the "sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-settings" command. That will incorrectly install the nvidia driver directly. If you have an Optimus system, you just install bumblebee-nvidia package and it will install the nvidia driver (correctly) for you.

okhay
one of my problem has been solved now don't get any more error messages on booting my laptop
but the screen resolution is still low.
my screen has shrunken up as mentioned in my question
please help me solve this problem all

thanks

also when i login this thing pop out

Dual GPUs are a total headache. I suspect you will have a tonne of issues with this. The technology is best avoided.

N1ck 7h0m4d4k15 (nicktux) said : #20

Hmmm... @Dave Lentz I'm not aware of that. Actually I thought that Nvidia proprietary driver is like a dependency for bumblebee to installed correctly.
And what if a user have already nvidia driver installed ? He/She must uninstall the nvidia driver and install it through bumblebee ?
Have a read on bumblebee troubleshooting => https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/Bumblebee/wiki/Troubleshooting

@hardik juneja Try the following commands please

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sudo apt-get install nvidia-experimental-310 nvidia-settings-experimental-310
sudo nvidia-xconfig

Then reboot again..

Thanks

N1ck 7h0m4d4k15 (nicktux) said : #21

Also in bumblebee troubleshooting mentions that nvidia's xorg.conf is not compatible with Optimus technology , so if above commands not work .. then try the below commands

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sudo reboot

2nd command will reboot your system.

Thanks

>> And what if a user have already nvidia driver installed ? He/She must uninstall the
>> nvidia driver and install it through bumblebee ?

From, what I've seen, if you install it without having bumblebee set it up, it won't work (maybe because the Ubuntu package sets up a custom xorg.conf as you pointed out).

@actionparsnip: plenty of users have working Optimus systems with Bumblebee. Telling a user to avoid certain hardware after the fact when it usually can be made to work (and then marking that comment as the "Answer") is probably not a good idea..

hey

it solved my major problem now i don't get any message on booting up also my screen has been restored

but now my i have lost my side bar and above taskbar

i solved this problem earlier by removing nvidia-current driver...

what to do now how to restore my sidebar and upper taskbar.

thanks

I cannot see the package bumblebee-nvidia.

Lets follow some troubleshooting commands

sudo cp /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf /etc/bumblebee/old.bumblebee.conf
sudo rm /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf
sudo apt-get install --reinstall bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia

give back here FULL results of above commands please and then reboot your system.
