ERROR: nvidia-installer must be run as root

When install downloaded driver for my Nvidia 8600GT graphic card I am receiving Error: Nvidia-installer must run as root.
please any one help me how to run as root?

system = admin. = hardware drivers . and your system will search for the best one .

 after you find and install restart then go to system = admin. = nvidia x sever and set screen resolution apply then save .

Hi Greg T

Thanks for your answer, I did as per your answer, after installing driver the system asked to restart, after restart the system crashed and unable to reboot again. Now I reinstalled the system and Still I am looking for driver installation.
