Are you talking about the files just being shown in one case in nautilus? For example, just display in all CAPS or all lowercase?

In the Linux file system, files are case sensitive.

So

helloworld.txt
HELLOWORLD.txt
Helloworld.txt
helloWorld.txt
helloworld.TXT

would be all different files capable of being in the same in same directory.

If a file manager just gave you it all in one case, you wouldn't be able to tell which is which.

What is the reason you don't want it to show the case? Readability?

As a "hack" you can try changing the default font (try to find a font with all one case) if that's the reason...

Hi. I would like to list files in alphabetical order, ignoring case for
the order, but displaying it for recognition.

Regards
Shane

Well, 'case sensitive' is indeed essential on *nix systems, it's simply smart.

But, concerning 'usability',

I'd say since Nautilus is a 'file browser'
http://library.gnome.org/users/user-guide/stable/nautilus-searching.html.en
and
Firefox a 'web browser' which has the ability to opt in/out to distinguish between upper/lower case with ctrl+F,
maybe it's possible to implement such a feature in the future.
Your suggestions are welcome.

or

However, in the meantime maybe the standard search satisfies your needs.

btw. my personal favorites are Nemo

and
gnome-commander ##which can be installed via Synaptic

Enjoy Ubuntu.
