Cannot connect to Network.....

Asked by johnlon

Binary package hint: nautilus

I updated to Karma from Jaunty last week, and for some reason, I can no longer connect to the network of shared computers, either on the partition to windows or through the router. I use Places>Network and it should show an Icon for both Windows and Ubuntu, but it only shows one Icon and that is for windows. I click on that, and I get the message....

Unable to mount location....Failed to retrieve share list from server.

Can any body help please?

John.

Do you have a firewall? Which is the restriction policy?

Hi I dont have a firewall. The funny thing is, before the upgrade, everything worked perfectly on 9.04. I was able to access all files on all machines. I have 9.04 on my netbook, and it cant find this machine. Its strange.

I think you should take a look in your smb.conf file and see if name resolve order is commented out, if so uncomment it (i.e. delete the semi-colon) and restart smb. Also you have to check if the WORkGROUP was preserved for your network.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1169149 . You should read this, maybe one of those indications will help you.

Good luck

Hi thank you for the url. I went through what it said on there, and it
still doesnt work. I am wondering if there is something missing. I just
discovered as well, that I now have the full version of Karmic. So there
are no more updates, I am at a complete loss as to why it wont work. I'm
also concerned that when it comes to the upgrade on my netbook, its
going to be the same.
