Asked by Chathura

I tried to connect Prolink PHS 100 modem.
Then desktop icons are dissapeared.
I can't access any folder (places)
Error is given as:
"nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in start_thread()"

how can I get solved this and get connected to internet via 'Prolink PHS100" modem?

Hi :)

This sounds quite unusual. Please can you let us know your cpu speed and ram size, also the amount of hard-drive space that Ubuntu has might be useful to know. When you are booting into ubuntu do you get a menu with lots of options for booting into Ubuntu or is there just 1 option for Windows and just 1 for Ubuntu?

Thanks and regards from

Thanks Tom! Thanks for the quick reply!
CPU intel dual core 2.16Ghz
RAM 4GB
System drive size 50GB (has another partion with 175GB)
I formated the system partition & installed Ubuntu 9.04.So I got no any option when booting.I didn't use Windows and ubuntu together.
Then all the above mentioned errors were given without any error notification.

After I was failed, I reinstalled Windows 7 and continued trying with Ubuntu with Live boot CD.Then the same error was given, but this time the error message was displayed in a dialog.

Thanks a lot for attending for my matter!

Hmmm, sorry i can't really help much except to suggest installing UBuntu and Windows to make a proper dual-boot system
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

This should help you gradually adjust to linux while still being able to use Windows to get a few things done
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu

Note that Ubuntu only really needs about 15Gb and can then read the Windows side so i tend to keep most of the data on the Windows side so that both Windows and Ubuntu can use the same files.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi,

It is usually better to get a LiveCd session working
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
and then do an install but if you are new to linux then it might be easier to just accept that not everything will work straight-away and so set things up so you can go back into Windows for those things until they get sorted
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
There's no need to set yourself a dead-line or make things stressful, just take your migration to linux at your own pace.

I would also copy your question into these other forums
http://www.linuxquestions.org/
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Signpost/Questions#help
you could then just copy&paste the url address of whichever one gets you the right answer first into all the rest of the places you asked to help all those places build up their knowledge-base.

I am still hoping that an expert who knows about wireless issues pops in here soon tho
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

I think this question is a bit old now and Launchpad is not good at dealing with older questions so please repost
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+addquestion
You can always copy this link back to this thread
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+question/80712
but i don't think we have really done much here.

Anyway it would be good to get this question back to the front-desk by re-posting it
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Problem is still there. even Karmic Koala alpha 4 also reports conflicts between PHS100 modem & Nautilus.

I think it might be best to repost this question. At first i thought it might be due to a low-spec machine or too low hard-drive space but it is obviously not anything like that. Please repost so that more people can have a look at this question rather than just me.

Thanks Tom,
I contacted prolink and they mailed me that they configured this properly on Jaunty Jakalope. What he asked me to do and it was hard to do without internet connection is update Ubuntu after installation. So today I use "keryx" to package all the updates from a windows machine. I have a hope that it would work. So I will try that too, and inform you whether it worked or not.

Anyway, I have no words to thank you for paying your kind attention on my trouble.
Thanks Again!

Welcome to linux-land, especially the ubuntu corner of it :)

Err, don't worry about thanking people all the time. We volunteer to help in here because we enjoy it. Mostly linux improves when people find something that is not working and write in to the community to ask about it. Until people ask or make comments it can be difficult to know if some particular combination of hardware doesn't work yet. Sometimes it is down to just one device but sometimes it can be the combination of hardware causing a problem. Once a problem is fixed for one person it invariably helps a lot of other people too :) So any complaint is usually, in effect helping gnu&linux improve! :) Of course it is always nice to get thanks so thanks for that :)

I hope you enjoy Ubuntu as much as i have :)
Regards from
Tom :)
