Missing application bars after re-boot

Asked by wordsmyth

Upon re-booting Ubuntu 9.04 from hibernate, I find I no longer have application bars top and bottom of screen, and cannot access the links i.e. APPLICATIONS, ADMINISTRATION etc or links I have left on the bottom bar. The program still works, but without the bars it's useless! I tried re-booting via recovery mode, but this made no difference. If no one can provide a solution, I'll have to re-install - with all the bother and angst that implies - and it won't be 9.04, that's for sure! Back to old Reliable 8.4

Open up a terminal, and enter these two commands. You can open a terminal without using the application bars by clicking on the desktop and pressing ctrl-alt-t

gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
killall gnome-panel

Thanks for the prompt ack. Much appreciated. Alas, I followed your
instructions without success. I pressed ctrl-alt-t on the desktop,
but no terminal window appeared. This is really frustrating ...

Id say file a bug against the linux kernel and say what is missing when your computer comes back from hibernation.

I have the same problem as wordsmyth. My application bar is missing, and from the desktop ctrl-alt-t doesn't seem to do anything at all. I'm a total noob at this so shane fagan's advice was Greek to me.
