Libavcodec

Asked by becu

Hello,
I'm (still) working with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and my problem is:
a message says: “libavcodec is outdated”. How do I get an update?
Also Adobe Flash is asking for an update, witch I cannot find in Ubuntu softwarecentrum.
What can I do?
Thanks,
Koen

Ubuntu 12.04 is not supported any more and the repositories have been removed. So there is no possibility for updates for libavcodec and adobe flash with Ubuntu tools any more. Maybe there are other sources on the web, but we cannot help with that.

You should upgrade to a supported Ubuntu release (I suggest 16.04 LTS with support until the year 2021).

Apparently you have upgraded to 14.04 in the meantime.
Your error report alone is rather useless if you don't tell on what occasion it showed up, and what consequences the error has.

Hello Manfred,
sorry for my poor info.
This is wat is happening:
1. when starting up the laptop: I can choose Ubuntu or Vista. When Ubuntu is the choise: I got "error file not found" "Press any key to continue”.
After pressing a key Ubuntu starts. Before Ubuntu opens the desktop, there occurs a black screen (about 35 sec).
In a white square the following message appears: "System problem detected" "annulate" or "report". The annulate button doesn't work. After pressing "Report" the desctop opens and the same message appaers again.
After pressing "Report" I'm prompted to give my password. Then I have the message I wrote you about yesterday. But it can be cloosed and the laptop works normally.
However, sometimes I am reminded that there is a newer version (16.04.3) that I can update to. Three choices: "no", "late" or "update now". I didn't update de laptop.

2 When I go to sleep mode, the laptop doesn't start again. Everything is frozen. After some time it starts up automatically (like I wrote you above).

May be reinstalling the 14.4 version is an option?

Thanks again for your interest.
Koen

Ok, this confirms that your system is successfully upgraded from 12.04 to 14.04.

For the "system problem detected" issue I see the following options:
1. trying to find out the root cause (I am unsure about the needed effort)
2. reinstall Ubuntu 14.04
3. do another upgrade from Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04
4. do a new installation of Ubuntu 16.04

It is your decision.

I tried to upgrade to 16.04 but unfortunate halfway the installation the process stopped (after a series of files it couldn't install): message: "installatie van de opwaarderingsbestanden is mislukt".
Then I got dphd-configure-a (herstelprocedure)
The laptop did start up but after a few moments it crashes and shut down.
When starting the laptop the purple screen with de different choices (Ubuntu, windows,..) appeared but black. It is possible to start windows but it is not possible to start Ubuntu.

When starting up the laptop a black screen with white letters appears: with the choice of Ubuntu or Windows.
After choosing Ubuntu I get "GNU GRUB cers 1.99-21ubuntu3.17". After a moment
"error file not found" (This is written 3 times)
Again after a few seconds there is a screen with
bracket"0.5845051"bracket "CPU:1PIO:1Com:swapper/o Not tained 4.4.0-93-generc#116Ubunte" is the first line. There are more mesages and the last is
bracket "0586762"bracket "---"bracket "end Kernel panic-not syncing:UFS:Unable to mount root f1 on unkown-block (0,0)"
That's all I can do. Exit or ESc do not work.
Maybe I need a DOS command to continue? I need a startup stick?

What you describe indicates that the settings for the grub boot loader have been somewhat screwed up, and thus booting from the hard disk is not possible.
To repair this you need an Ubuntu installation kit on DVD or bootable USB stick, or you could try with boot-repair (https://sourceforge.net/projects/boot-repair-cd/files/)

I made a 32 bits boot-repair-cd (because I think the laptop is an "old" one). Unfortunately, it is not working: the CR-ROM is working (you can hear it) but on the screen it starts up as I told you before.

To boot your computer from the boot-repair CD you have to insert the CD, initiate a reboot, and very early in the boot process press the right function key (which one this is depends on make and model of your computer system) to enter BIOS setup or to enter boot media selection. Choose to boot from DC (or DVD or optical medium, whatever it offers), and this should then start the boot-repair system.

Maybe you have some suggestions? Is it possible to format only the Ubuntu partition of the HD?

You need to be able to boot from an external medium (either CD/DVD or bootable USB stick) to (re-)install Ubuntu.
I do not know your hardware, so I cannot help.

Where does Ubuntu 16.04 now come from?
The previous messages told that you had Ubuntu 12.04 and upgraded to 14.04.

How does this login request look like?
Have you tried your username and password from Ubuntu 12.04?

I opened the recovery scrolled down to the, what I thought, the oldest version, entered and it started loading. It appears to be the new version.

I am sorry about the answers. The window looked like the Terminal window and unfornutaley I do not now the username anymore (I did not install the Ubuntu myself at the time).
I have some new info: I started the Memtest 86+5.01.
After a few seconds it showed 16 errors in pas 0.
from error 7 to 16 are shown on the screen.
This is the line for 7:
Tst Pas Failing Address Good Bad Error Bits Count CPU
5 0 000052e 1718 82.OMB 20202020 a8c09456 88e0b47b 7 0

I started the test yesterday and it is still running (over 15 hours now) and it is in Pass 11. Untill this moment no new errors occurred.
Is this helpfull?

The memtest will run forever if not stopped.

If there are memory errors shown, then this is not good.

I assume that the username is koen
