running Java in Ubuntu 8 Ibex

Asked by David Harries

I have downloaded JDK and JRE and I pasted a command pasted in a psoting for one of them (good). It seemed to work. However, I cannot get Java to run. I wish to open Microsoft files in a storage system (which works well with Word etc files). I had to ensure that Java and applets were running for the storage (humyo). I cannot open files through Ubuntu. I get an error message saying that Java is not on. I do not understand the Java website, as it mentions lots of Linux versions and other stuff.
I may have got stuck at the Sun licence stage as I could not find a way of signing up to it.

How to install Java

To install sun-java6

Please first enable the multiverse repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Software restrictecd by copyright or legal issue ( multiverse )"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo aptitude install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin java6-sdk

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then to confrim the Java Sun Licence play with tab key and when the item selected became red press enter...

Hope this helps

Thanks a lot. I have got stuck, though.

This is the sequence of what I have typed:-
david@Harries:~$ sudo aptitude update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo aptitude
installsun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin java6-sdk
E: The update command takes no arguments
david@Harries:~$ MY PASSWORD
bash: MY PASSWORD: command not found
david@Harries:~$

I do not understand this.

I went through the first step. The boxes were ticked in Software sources.
But I do not understand what "close and repository reload" mean. I just
closed what I saw the ticks (enabling).

Thanks.

Sincerely
David Harries
