synchronise folders between hard drive and external drive

how do I synchronize folders on the hard drive to folders on an external drive. so that any additions to either drive will be copied across to the external, like a backup system?

There are many ways, how exactly will depend on your goal. If you want a GUI interactive tool you might consider installing GRSync. (Look for "grsync" in the Synaptic package manager.) The project's homepage is here: http://www.opbyte.it/grsync/
