flash player

Asked by paulmcgrath

I attempted watching videos on the internet (such as youtube)

When i tried a message told me i needed to install the latest plugins,so i clicked on what came up to do this & the file 'install_flash_player_9_linux(3).tar.gz'

I am on linux

When i click on this a new window opens entitled as the above 'install_...etc',so i right click on it & the options it gives me are:
extract
cut
copy
rename &
delete

There are other options which are shaded:
view file
other files &
paste

Under 'type' on this it this it says 'folder',i double right click then this comes up:
name:flashplayer-installer size:21.2 kb type:unknown date modified:20 november 2007 , 23:24
name:libflashplayer.so size:7.7 MB type:JET database date modified:20 november 2007 , 23:24

This time when i right click on either of these nothing is shaded so i could click on:
view file
open files
extract
cut
copy
rename &
delete...just paste is shaded

I get to this stage but i don't know what to do next to complete the flash player process

Hope someone can help

Thanks

There is currently a but (or several) in the flash install. To be honest I don't know the state of these right now or if this is what is affecting you. It sounds like you are downloading the flash source file which isn't what you want. A better approach (an possibly the one that is broken) is to open up add/remove from the applications menu, change the show box to say all available and search for and install flash. If that fails (the bug I mentioned) then try the step outlined on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=636397. In particular, pay attention to the section in blue.

Still no joy but cheers for your time...this is my latest problem:

Originally told i needed 'macromedia flash plugin' as i needed to update to continue to be able to watch videos, such as youtube

Had problems getting this then got it but it still didn't help

Was advised to get 'flashplugin_nonfree_9.0.115.0ubuntu0.7.10_i386.deb

Now i can see videos again (with sound) but the picture is flickering and out of sync, tried unticking 'macromedia' but when i do there is no picture there again atall so ticked 'macromedia' back on again but the picture flickers and is out of sync again as before

What should i do?,deleted the original 'install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz as it wouldn't do anything & i don't know if there's anything else i might still have on my pc that could be causing this problem,i've looked but there doesn't seem to be anything else (in my amateur opinion) that i can try

Cheers

Maybe it's best to start over. Remove all mention of flash. Search Synaptic and uncheck any plugins. Then download and install the fixed version from http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10761023/flashplugin-nonfree_9.0.115.0ubuntu2_i386.deb.

Hope that helps.

I went into synaptic package manager but none of the boxes are 'checked' but rather either unchecked white boxes or green boxes (also unchecked),i noticed some of the green boxes were in reference to other stuff i use on my pc (such as my search engine, music downloading sites, instant messaging, music burner etc) which aren't directly linked to my problem, done this from the advanced search as the first search returned no matches

Any ideas what i should do now?

thanks again

Ah, sorry. The green boxes are essentially the "checked" ones - i.e. the things that are installed. If the flash one is green, right click and choose to uninstall (or remove) and then try installing from the link above.

actually it is a bug in 7.10

first go to the top panel and go to system-administration-software sources
it will prompt u for the password and a window will appear
then navigate to the updates tab and check 1. important security updates
                                                                       2. recomended updates
                                                                       3. pre-released updates
the click the close button and it will prompt u for reloading click it it will gather all the updates and u will be notified of the updates
install the updates and reboot ur system

then go to this link

http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/download.pl?arch=i386&file=pool%2Fmultiverse%2Ff%2Fflashplugin-nonfree%2Fflashplugin-nonfree_9.0.48.0.2%2Breally0ubuntu12_i386.deb&md5sum=4c2cde9277e18c47a42ae8efc3720eb7&arch=i386&type=main

and click on any of the mirriors to download the flash player.
then install the flash player the same way as installing a software in windows.

To "uninstall" you install something over the top. Backup your files to another location (preferably not on the disk), format the partition and install something new to it.

paulmcgrath,

This is a very old question, and it's not really clear what problem you are trying to solve at this point. Are you looking for assistance in uninstalling Ubuntu 6.06?

I suggest you open a new question on this topic -- few people will find your new question if it is appended to an old one with an unrelated subject line.
