If your data is important, you will have made more than one copy, for example on a USB memory tick or even emailing it to yourself for storage

I emailed it, but I'm sort of "banned" from using his computer most of
the time. It was emailed on 7/31, that's my last copy, and he's edited
and added more since then. The memory stick we had recently, was a
"bad" one and nothing copied.

Is there nothing left I can do to "undo" that overwrite command? As I
said, I didn't close the Word document. I'm sitting here and emotional
mess looking through this system for anything.

Thanks...please advise

Do I go to the "Terminal" and type in => Open into the black box
area? And then would I type in the file name and or date? What keeps
it from opening the NOW overwritten file?

Do I go to Places or System? ...then what?

I don't mean to be dense here, but please take me through this from
start to finish.

You may get lucky with foremost, otherwise yes, it's gone. You have learned the value of backups the hardest way possible. You can use foremost in liveCD so the partition is unmounted.

Where do I find "liveCD"? Do I type in the word foremost somewhere?

Please help me. I know this is a NASTY lesson. But if there is a
thread of a hope, I need to try to find it. I don't want you to read
about a woman being dumped on the "highway of life" or an interstate
because she accidentally overwrote he husbands nearly finished book in
process. (yes I'm kidding about the dumped part, but it'll be
incredibly painful if I have to tell him this.

The liveCD is the CD you installed with, it will give a desktop which you can manipulate your install with. You can install foremost in the environment and use it. If you have used wubi then you will need to take a LOT more steps to get at the data and I am not sure foremost can work on wubi

Our son installed this for us (he lives on another continent 2,000
miles away. He did it online without a CD. He wiped the computer of
all things Microsoft, loaded our files on his external hard drive, and
installed Ubuntu.

Is there really NO WAY to look at the Office files as of 6:00 am today?

Then download and burn an Ubuntu ISO and make your own CD.
