installed some updates on ubuntu 9.10 then onwards an not access my home folder or video, pictures, documents folders

Asked by kapil

i've installed some of the new updates to the ubuntu 9.1, since the update i have not been able to open anything that was on my computer. all my folders under "places" will not open and i am unable to access my documents ,media, pictures etc. when i click to open a folder a window opens in the bottom task bar saying "opening home folder" but nothing ever appears and the window dissappears. 1 odd thing is that i can not save anything to the desktop neither existing files n folders are visible even on mouse right click nothing happens, however almost all applications under "Application" head are working fine, any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks and Regards

Before to go deeply please try this...

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal or if you can't please press ctrl+alt+f2 to access to a pseudo terminal and made login with your user and password

Tip: right click with mouse on the terminal title caption and select the item "Always on Top" doing this you will force the terminal window to stay on top of the other windows and you will find very easy to copy single row from this web page into the terminal...
Something more about using the terminal https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal

Then type or better copy and paste a row a time then press enter:
(Tip: select the single row to copy then right click into the terminal and to quick paste click with middle button of mouse )

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get update

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

CTRL+ALT+T
