what graphics chip do you use?
does the system have a make and model?
which release are you trying to install?
how are you trying to install it?
do you see the black screen during install or is on an installed OS?

and what do you mean when you say " i can see a little of my desktop but its not clear enough to read or click on a tab"?

what were you doing when this happened?

did you turn the brightness down by mistake?

look for a sun symbol on one of the function keys. function keys lie at the top of the keyboard and starts with an F followed by 1, 2, 3, etc (F1,F2,F3). the sun symbol looks like a circle with sticks radiating from the circle. there will be two keys associated with brightness. one to turn it up, the other to turn it down. to activate the brightness, you have to press the key labelled FN also with the F key.

Hi Mathias , please answer 'actionparsnip' questions .. to provide us with more infromations as that will clear things out.

this could be related to several areas , Your Graphic card for one ..

What are these options?

nomodeset
The newest kernels have moved the video mode setting into the kernel. So all the programming of the hardware specific clock rates and registers on the video card happen in the kernel rather than in the X driver when the X server starts.. This makes it possible to have high resolution nice looking splash (boot) screens and flicker free transitions from boot splash to login screen. Unfortunately, on some cards this doesnt work properly and you end up with a black screen. Adding the nomodeset parameter instructs the kernel to not load video drivers and use BIOS modes instead until X is loaded.

the ' BIOS modes ' refer to the laptop onboard Graphic Card.

so if you can pass the GRUB Menu and see the black screen after that , see if you can switch to a real console (tty1) by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1 , then login with your username and password and issue commands from there .

lets say you wanna check what graphic card your laptop have you'll do .. sudo lshw -C Video

to really pass this issue and get to the Desktop , you must set one of the kernel boot options .

To set kernel boot options, you must edit your grub configuration. You can do this temporarily for a single boot by entering the grub menu. If you do not get to see the grub boot menu after the bios automatically, you may have to press SHIFT key after the bios logo to get in to grub:

Select the default ubuntu kernel (usually the top one), and rather than pressing enter, press E to edit.

Next you'll see the following screen :

http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/3509/dgfdgrunningoraclevmvir.png

Press DOWN ARROW until you get to the line that starts with

linux /boot

and press END keys to position your cursor at the end of the that line usually ending with “quiet splash”.

Now you can type in additional kernel options like nomodeset , or if you have an old Intel card you could try adding i915.modeset=1 or i915.modeset=0 acpi=off .

after you add the option you want to set press control+X to boot the modified grub entry.

# Note

setting boot options this way only applies to a single boot. If you reboot the machine, those settings will be lost, unless you make them permanent.

You’ll want to change these settings in GRUB so they’ll automatically be applied on each reboot. To do so, follow the steps below:

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Find the line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash”
Replace it with: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash <option>”
For example, if I you have an older Intel model, your GRUB configuration should read:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash i915.modeset=1″

Save your changes and you should get proper graphics on each reboot.
