My cpu frequency reaches 100% and when I boot up, sometimes it says my swap drive isnt mounted.

Asked by nogloww

I am running Ubuntu 11.10, and ever since I upgraded from a lower version, my computer runs really slow, the Cpu reaching 100% frequently (and memory goes way up when that happens).

When I boot up I sometimes get a message about my swap drive not being present or mounted, (dev/mapper/cr??swap not present or mounted) and when it finally does boot up, its a blank screen with only my chosen background image and no programs or anything to click at all.

Should I reinstall Ubuntu in a lower version or is there some fix for this?

Update: I can no longer get past my blank background. Multiple boot ups have left me with a blank screen (working mouse and keyboard) just cant run any programs. Update: my computer finally loaded to where I can navigate to all my programs. I am still having the problem with my Cpu reaching 100% and locking up though. When I check the system monitor, it says I have 145.7 GiB of free space, 95.3GiB available, swap history is at 0, gnome-system monitor is at the top of the list of CPU usage, fluctuating between 14 and 30% and 5.8MiB of memory. Manufacturers website wil have the BIOSes. You can enter setup (before grub loads) to check the BIOS version. You may need to make a bootable USB stick to update the BIOS

I checked the Asus website and downloaded the latest BIOS file but it isn't
a file that I can read. Are you saying I need to put that little file on a
usb and boot into set up and try to install it from there? Also, I read
that you have to install Asus Update in order to use the BIOS update and I
can't find a download of "Asus Update" for Linux.

This is getting me nowhere. Its not an issue with my BIOS. My usb drives wont allow me to open them, saying I don't have permission to access them. None of there problems ( and ive had quite a few more) happened before I upgraded from a LTS Version on Ubuntu. I guess I'll just reinstall and go from there.

I'm sorry but that doesn't help me. I really don't think it's a problem
with my BIOS. And like I said, I can't flash anything because my computer
won't read my usb drive anymore.

ok, I did the commands to update my kernel, but nothing changed. I still have to use keyboard short cuts to bring up the terminal as there is no doc or any thing visible to click on my background. This is what happens when I reboot. 99% of the time it tells me during boot that my swap drive is not present or mounted and when it boots up, I get a blank background. Is there something else I can do. Do I need to reinstall a swap drive or something? I'm not even sure I understand what that is...Please help. I don't want to have to reinstall Ubuntu again.

I can't download it until I find a way to get my dock to show up so I can get on the Internet. I have already done the terminal commands to update my kernel and nothing changed. The only thing I can do on my computer right now is to pull up the terminal using keyboard shortcuts. What about the swap drive issue? Is there a way to fix that?

Also, my computer will no longer read my usb drive. When it did boot correctly, the usb drive would show up but it wouldn't let me open it (didn't matter if it was my phone, my Kindle, or a usb stick) saying that I didn't have authorization to open it. This just happened out of no where one day; I wan't messing with root or the permissions on my account or anything. And this was before it started only booting to the blank screen. Now I can't do anything with it except open the terminal using keyboard shortcuts. I have tried updating my kernel through the terminal and nothing changed. I have updated and upgraded all that I can or know how to and nothing changes. Just a blank screen with my background. No dock. No status bar. No programs. But the keyboard and mouse still work. Is this at all related to the message that I get when booting that my "swap drive is not present or mounted"? How do I fix that?

mfauzirahman - I followed the link for the Kernel but I don't understand what I'm supposed to do with all those links. (forgive me, I'm not a developer and I don't know code or anything). I followed it to the latest set of files. Do I flash them during setup? Because I can't download them to my computer directly; I still have nothing to work with but the Terminal.

I just tried to flash a new BIOS and during the boot up it said it was reading the flash drive, then it said, "1005HA file not found on device!" What does that mean?

I am in the process of reinstalling Ubuntu (downgrading to 10.04. I borrowed a computer to make a start up drive) and it is repartitioning my drives so hopefully I will have my swap drive back. I'll get pack to this post soon and close it out if everything goes ok and I have a working computer again. Thanks for everyones help.
