What you are seeing is known as a "terminal". This is probably your old install - it is probably functional, and your data is likely still intact. Do you get any messages on the screen at all?
If you want to boot from the CD, you have to go into your laptop's BIOS (usually f2, delete, escape or f11 key -- depends upon your motherboard) and ensure that the boot order is set such that the CD is the first boot item.
If you need a more direct guide, you will need to post your laptop make and model.

OK that is not working let me start over.
History: I was not liking my notebook I had Vista Operating system have a
friend that suggested
running ubuntu I did And Loved It and thats is the only Operating system on
notebook but then I wanted what I think is the best of both worlds so I
wanted to start over by wiping my notebook of
everything and my intent was to use my original recovery disc with XP to
wipe everything and install XP then use My ubuntu installation disc to
install and partion my notebook but all I have is a Dos screen on my
pavilion notebook.
I pressed F12 And F11 separately and got a different response.
now when I push the start button I get a flash of the Invent and then it
goes to a DOS screen and I don't know what command to type in to do
anything, can you help

Can you please post the model of your laptop?
It's hard to know what a "DOS" screen is, other than I assume it is mostly black (it could be your BIOS, a windows prompt, or a linux terminal). Could you also maybe post a photo of your laptop with the "DOS" screen? (You can upload photos to somewhere like http://
Without this information it is hard to troubleshoot your problem. Different models of laptop have different procedures for altering the boot order.
