New Ubuntu 11.04

Asked by Margaret Mackintosh

I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my LinuxCertified laptop. I have been having problems with the screen freezing and turning gray and lately just freezing without turning gray. I thought maybe if I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 just maybe it would solve the problem. Or would it make the problem worst? Also how do I download my 'home folder' to a blank DVD so I don't lose all my pictures etc.? Since I am also the administrator it will not let me copy my home folder to a blank DVD. Any suggestions.

I have taken the laptop in to be fixed in the past. Was told I needed a new hard drive. $250 and a new hard drive later, I still have the same problem. Was going to try a different repair shop but the reviews on it, is not encouraging. Don't want more problems then I now have. So I am not planning to take my laptop in. Would be nice if a upgrade would take care of the problem.

Have you tested your RAM?
Why do you not already have a backup?

Coping or dragging your home folder requires root privileges. Instead try to drag everything *inside* /home/yourusername/ to brasero (or your favourite burning app). It should be enough to save your documents to a dvd.

I agree with andrew: test first your ram booting with left shift pressed down and select memtest

Hi,

No, I have not tested my RAM. How do I go about doing that. I don't know a lot about computers. I don't have a back up for my home folder because the CD/DVD Creator after it starts 'burning' it stops with 'Error' and ask that the blank DVD be removed. I cannot figure out why I am not allowed to copy my home folder to a disk. But, I am not able to. If you can help with either problem, I would appreciate it.

Hi Jorge,

I will try what you suggested about 'copying or dragging everything in my home folder to be 'burned' onto a blank DVD. I am not sure how to go about testing my Ram even with what you wrote. How do I get 'memtest up'? I do not know a lot about the programming of a computer. Just browsing the Internet and emails. But, the main question has gone unanswered. Does anyone think that by upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 could take care of the freezing problem that I have? To do so, I need to save all the info in my home folder. That is what brought in the other question. Is 11.04 supported? If anyone has any idea, please let me know.

Hi again,

Would I need to go to a 'Terminal' to do the test?

Hi,

Well I held the shift key down when I started the laptop but it did not give me anything like a choice of 'memtest' Just started up like it always does.

Hi Jorge,

I did as you suggested about the contents of the home folder and it worked. That has made me happy. Won't lose all my stuff now. But, can anyone tell me if by upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 will take care of the freezing and graying problem? Any ideas? I am sure that taking this laptop to a computer shop will just cost me lots of money and the problem will still be there. Happened before. Oh! do you know if the new Ubuntu 11.04 is supported or not? Doesn't say on their page. So half of my problem has been solved.

My suggest:
1) Test RAM:
Launch software center and install "memtest86+". Afterwards, the choice of "memtest" should appear on reboot. (you might have to press shift)
2) Test your backup: Make sure you also backed up the files and folders beginning with a dot, like ".gnome2". To test this, open your backup dvd in the file manager, then in the menu bar press "view" and "show hideden files" (or alike, my system is in German.)
3) Test 11.04:
Why don't you just install 11.04 (with a boot cd or usb stick) and test if it works well. If not, you can reinstall 10.04 LTS again. (Absolutely make sure you backed up everything. I'd suggest to back-up /etc too, but you'd neet root access for that.)

Hi,

I will do all as you suggest before installing Ubuntu 11.04. One thing I did find out on their download page is that it can be installed using the Update Manager and you are not suppose to lose a thing in the transaction. Even though I have backups now, I think I will try that after downloading to a DVD. So I guess since no one is able to tell me if Ubuntu 11.04 will take care of my freezing problem or not, my problem is solved. Thanks a lot.

Hi Margaret,

as far as I know you have to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 before you can upgrade to 10.04. Chances are high that you won't lose data while upgrading. The problem is, configuration files (that _could_ cause your problems) could also stay on your system. If you have problems with your system I recommend a fresh install instead of upgrading (backup needed).

Good luck!

Oh, I forgot to mention: You could try the live-cd of Ubuntu 11.04 before installing it. In that case you could test it before changing anything :)

Hi again,

I just checked for memtest86+ and it is already installed. Just don't know how to get it up on the screen. There is a lot of stuff that comes up at first, but the print is so small and it is so fast that I don't get to read but a line or two.

I will be putting Ubuntu 11.04 onto a blank DVD. Then will try it first. Also I will check to see if I need to upgrade to anything between Ubuntu 10.4 LTS and Ubuntu 11.04. Thanks.

concerning memtest86, taken out of https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2:

· If the menu is not normally displayed during boot, hold down the SHIFT key as the computer attempts to boot to display the GRUB 2 menu.
· In certain circumstances, if holding the SHIFT key method does not display the menu pressing the ESC key repeatedly may display the menu.

Hi,

Just tried the shift key while booting. Didn't work. So tried the Esc key and it worked. Got 2 things to choose between, but neither was a 'memtest'. First tried one. Nothing, so rebooted and tried the 2nd one. Nothing there either, just got the same login page. So I really have no idea how much memory I have. Will be downloading Ubuntu 11.04 to a blank DVD and will also see about 10.10. Thanks for your help.

The page shows every time I try to start my computer "this page does not exist' Well then get rid of it. I can see it. It DOES exist. In Three years 'launchpad' has not helped me and I will not pay until they put down their bongs and start helping. Does anyone remember caring ?

Hi Loren,

I've used Launchpad quite often in the past several months. I have never PAID to use their web site ANSWER program. I just Google Launchpad, click on Ubuntu and then get a login/signin page. Since I am a member I log in and select 'Ask a Question' on the right side of the screen. I put as much info as I have into the question. Just a few days ago a man named Michael communicated with me for several days and put a lot of effort into helping me get a screensaver on my new Ubuntu 11.10 system. I am a dummy as far as knowing commands go. He suggested what to do and finally I did get a screensaver on my system. But, without his help, I was lost. NO CHARGE for helping me. After all this is a FREE SOURCE system and it all is free. Only things that are not, is Microsoft systems. This is Linux and FREE.

I am assuming you have a Linux system on your computer. If you have Microsoft Windows, etc. then they may charge, I do not know since I do have Linux. Believe me these people care and are more then happy to help with a Linux problem.
