OEM Config (Temp User) Password

Asked by Steven Simpson

I installed the OEM of Ubuntu 22.04 on a friend's laptop and was finishing the install. I opened the shipping to user thing to close out the temp user setup stuff and it asks for a password. I don't know what the password is for this account. Was this password setup when the install of the OEM happened or is this a password from somewhere else? My friend had typed something in during the install for a password field, but it does not work. I've looked online for this password and can't find it.

There seem to be some inconsistencies in this question:

The kernel package linux-meta-oem-5.17 does not know anything about passwords. So this question probably has been asked in a wrong area.

I do not understand what exactly you call "close out the temp user setup stuff". A correct Ubuntu installation does the clean-up of temporary files from the setup process automatically, without asking for passwords.

What exactly did you do? Which source and medium did you use for installation?

Ubuntu uses the "sudo" concept. Whenever somebody wants to execute an administrative action, that user is asked for his own password for verification, (if that user is granted the right to perform admin tasks). On Ubuntu systems the "root" user is disabled and nobody needs to know his password.

If you have only one user who is allowed admin tasks and do not know the password any more, you can reset it with the procedure described in https://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

I installed Ubuntu 22.04 via USB. The install option that we had was “OEM install.” Ubuntu installed fine and allowed us to download updates and install other packages that my friend wanted. After we were done, we followed the next step by double clicking a link on the desktop. The link was called “Prepare for shipping to user” that OEM businesses use so when the user boots the first time, they have to go through the setup process. When you double click the link, a password is required to close out the OEM setup process. I have not found where this password is for the OEM setup account on the internet. It is a Temporary Account named “OEM Configuration (Temporary Account).” This account is the only account on the machine. The “First time setup” has not been done because we can’t close out the OEM setup.

Thanks.

As already written in my previous comment:

The password that has to be entered is the one that has been selected in the initial installation.

"My friend had typed something in during the install for a password field, but it does not work."

Then your friend has either mistyped the password at the installation or he is mistyping it now.

Already written above:
You can set a new password with the procedure in https://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword
The username most probably is "oem" (without quotes).

Can you help with this problem?
