How do I activate the icon Control Signs?

Asked by Ingrid Nilsson

Recently I upgraded my Ubuntu program and have now the version 11.10. I have noticed several changes from the former version and try to get used to the new ”applications”.

There is one thing that I have not succeeded in obtaining, and that is how to activate the icon that looks like an inverted P. In Swedish the explanation text on this icon goes as follows: ”Visar kontrolltecken i texten, till exempel stycketecken, radombrytningar, tabbtecken och mellanslag.” In my ”home-made English” that means ”The icon shows control signs in the text, for example division of text in paragraphs, line shifts, tabulator and space signs”.

I have tried in all ways to activate the icon, which I find very useful. The closest I have come to a solution was when I used Libre-Office-Help – Libre Office Writer. I followed the instructions and came as far as ”Formatting Help”/”Control Signs”: From here I get nowhere. PLEASE, help me!

I'm not on my ubuntu machine atm, but am on a similar system.

For me this symbol is in the view menu, view->nonprinting characters, and can be activated with ctrl+f10

I have tried ctrl+F10 before and it did not help this time either.

Hi Ingrid

Ctrl+F10 may not work, especially if that key combination is mapped to something else at the operating system level.

Have you tried going to the View menu and selecting Non-Printing characters. This menu entry should have the ¶ sign against it. Clicking this menu entry toggles the Non-Printing characters on and off and the ¶ sign is highlighted when they are on.

What you should see, when it is on, are ¶ signs for paragraph ends (hard returns), · (middle dot) for spaces, → (rightwards arrow) for Tabs and ↵ (downwards arrow with corner leftwards) for carriage returns (soft returns).

It is possible, of course, that the text you are looking at has no hard returns in it, and so no ¶ signs, but you should see some spaces, at least.

Tony,

I have tried the View menu and selected Non-Printing characters. (I used a text with all possibilities to show the different signs.) When the ¶ sign on the tool-bar is on and highlighted - nothing happens, no spaces at all are shown. When the ¶ sign is off and thus not highlighted - naturally nothing happens

Before I upgraded my Ubuntu to 11.10 I had no problems with the ¶ sign. I have always used it, since I first started using computers, and find it very useful. I am afraid there is a bug in the program - and maybe very few people use the ¶ sign, and no one but me has reacted.

Hi Ingrid

I wonder, are you using Print or Web layout? (See top of View Menu). The display of Non-Printing characters for both these layout modes is controlled by the following options:

Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > Formatting Aids

or

Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer/Web > Formatting Aids

Have a look and see what is set for the mode you are using.

Hi Tony,

I am using the Print layout and I tried again Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > Formatting Aids. Here I came to the following text "Activate the ¶ sign on tool-bar 'Standard' (this is the Swedish word). All signs that you have marked on "Formatting aid" will be shown." I did, but still nothing happens.

There must be something I don't understand how to do, a step maybe that I have missed to go - or have gone in the wrong way, because I am not fully familiar with IT-English.

Do other people who use Ubuntu 11.10 get the ¶ sign work?

Hi Ingrid

I use 11.10 and I do not have any problem with the ¶ sign. I have never heard of it being a problem in any version

Did you have LibreOffice with a previous version of Ubuntu? Or did you just get it when Ubuntu changed over to it (in 11.04, I think)?

Can you email me an image of what you see when you go Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > Formatting Aids. If you click on my name at the top of this message, you will see my email address. You can get a screen shot of the dialogue box with Alt-Print Scr.

Tony,

Thank you for your patience with me. When I for the 100th time opened
Tools/Options/LibreOffice Writer and was near to do as I had done
before, being blind to what I should do, I double-clicked on LibreOffice
Writer and found new options. There I could choose Formatting Aids! I
had got what I wanted. Thank you very, very much for your guidance.

I have also learnt a lot of other things about LibreOffice Writer and
Ubuntu, a "bonus" one could say, on my way to the right answer on my
question.

Best regards,

Ingrid Nilsson,
today a happy writer!
