When you last unplugged it, did you use the safe remove feature in the OS before physically unplugging it?

I suggest you plug it into a windows pc and chkdsk it. then safe remove the device and test in ubuntu

If the file check in Windows failed then it does not sound like a healthy device. When you unplug the device from your system do you use the safe removal feature BEFORE you physically remove it?

Thanks

Then I suggest you wipe the device and format it, preferable NTFS if you use Windows as well, or Ext2 if you only use Linux

Pendrive's preferable filesystem for general use (Linux or Windows) is
FAT32. As pendrive I mean USB-stick (not HDD).

Use the Disk Utility (or Disks) instead of Gparted. For simple "Delete" and
"Create" filesystems is easier.

Please, can you give direction on how to wipe because it shows write protected when you try to format. I use kubuntu

Use gparted and write a new file system to it. The storage will need to be unmounted to be manipulated

gksudo for gui apps, not sudo.
