How to upgrade kmymoney 0.8 to 0.9 in Kubuntu8.04?

Asked by Alan Weeks

KMyMoney obtained from the KMM website has install instructions that are suitable only for a computer specialist.
The INSTALL file gives a multitude of options which are confusing to the non-techie.
Do you actually want non-techies to use the programme?
If you want the general user as a customer, then the concept of 'presentation' needs to be re-considered.
I like KMM 0.8 but it lacks visual charts which I find helpful in MS-Money and Quicken---I'm not an accountant either!
Where can I obtain a KMM 0.9 d/load in .deb, .rpm, or with _straight-forward_ instructions for installation in Kubuntu 8.04?
(The kubuntu Add/Remove does not indicate which version it offers).

Alan, the 0.9 version is marked as development. That means it is not available exactly because it is for specialists. However, as we have gone through a time of bug fixing and stabilization without major errors, we made it available through special packages for all major distros, but you have to take a few extra steps. This is exactly because it wouldn't be nice from us to offer a development version to normal users.
You can have the 0.9 version installed in Hardy if you add a PPA (Personal Package Archive) that is offered by Clay, one of our contributors.

You can add the PPA to Adept, or Synaptic, whatever is your package manager of choice.

Here are the instructions to install it from there: https://edge.launchpad.net/%7Eclaydoh/+archive

Please tell me if you have any problem installing from there.

That PPA is updated regularly from CVS, and it is really easy to install and keep updated. In that version you will find a lot of new features. The help is mostly updated, though some stuff is missing. That is something we are working on as we prepare for 1.0 release this year.
Feel free to ask any question you might have.

As a final note, I would like to make a few clarifications. First, if you look at the forums or the mailing lists archives, you will find a lot of help for normal users, you can also write to the mailing lists which are our primary way of providing help. We will be glad to help you every step of the way. Second, we are a small team of people who work on this on our free team, to provide a free alternative of an personal finance manager. We try to provide as many features and as much help as we can, but our time is limited, and every second we work on this, gratis, is a second we don't spend with our families, or doing other stuff.

Dear Hei Ku

Thank you for your very prompt and detailled response to my query.

I really did not expect any answer so soon, so I was pleasantly surprised.

From your letter, I realise that I have a lot to learn about open
source & the open source community.

As it is about midnight here in eastern Australia, I will defer any
action until the morning.

Once again, thank you for your promptness and your clear explanations.

Regards,

Alan W/.

Dear Hei Ku,

Your answer to my query was just what I needed. After a mishap with a
"database locked" message in Adept I installed KMM 0.9 without further
problems.

KMM 0.9 has a more 'finished' appearance than KMM 0.8 (although I can't
compare them on screen because 0.8 has been deleted).

It is too early to say how KMM will handle my book-keeping needs as I am
still setting up the categories etc. that I require. I prefer to produce
data in the categories required by the Australian Taxation Office.

I am willing to make a modest donation to KMM group if you could point
me to the instructions on the procedure.

I will 'follow the prompt' to mark my query solved.

I really appreciate your guidance, both for the update itself and also
on the workings of the KMM group.

Thanks once again,

regards,

Alan W/.
