Fool proof installation in 2nd. HD

Asked by Walter Blass

For learning purposes, I've been running Kubuntu 7.04 from the ISO CD.
I need a few, basic and safe "how to start" instructions to install it definitely and separately in a second HD.
I know that in any case I must save all drives of my first HD with WinXP, in advance. But my questions are:

1. I need to know the proper safe commands to guide the installation programme to install 7.04 in my 2nd. HD.
2. Once installation is complete in the 2nd. HD do I get an automatic dual boot: 1st.HD for WinXP and 2nd.HD in Kubuntu 7.04.

Even if it looks silly, I would very much appreciate your kind answer on this, because I couldn't find that particular items in any tutorial, manual, forum, etc.

1. I need to know the proper safe commands to guide the installation programme to install 7.04 in my 2nd. HD.

Have a look at this page for detailed info:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation

The only critical phase will be partitioning. Remember that your 2nd hd will have a name like (hd1) in grub terms or hdb (for two IDE drives) or sdb (for two SATA drives) in Linux terms.

You may also watch this video for some insights on what is to come during installation and what choices to make:

2. Once installation is complete in the 2nd. HD do I get an automatic dual boot: 1st.HD for WinXP and 2nd.HD in Kubuntu 7.04.

Unless something went wrong you will be automagically able to choose your OS at boot. If I remember it correctly your default choice will be Ubuntu, but you can change that easily if you want.

Thank you very much Cesare.

Hardware compatibility might be a minor problem. So far, running from my
Desktop CD everything was recognized, with the exception of a HP Scanner
3670.

I still have a long way to go before installing 7.04 in my PC, but now
I can see light at the end of the tunnel.

Best regards.

Walter
