Kubuntu firewall?

Asked by Mondo

Is there a firewall in Kubuntu? If so, how do I view/change the configuration and (more importantly) how do I make it launch at boot?

If there isn't a built-in firewall, which ones are the easiest to install and configure? Also, what about StartUp?

There are a firewall in all Linux Systems. it's iptables, and you can use a terminal/console to control it. However, you can use a front-end for manage it. Firestarter is a example of it.

Thank you, Antonio,
I've installed Firestarter and found, to my surprise, that Kubuntu has an option (Rt-click) to add programs to the "Run Dialog". This was a nice find and I wish other versions of Linux were as intuitive.

OK... now how about Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware and Anti-Spam?

You don't need anti-spyware, there isn't any.

Many people don't bother with antivirus on Linux because there are so few viruses.

Antispam is (in my opinion) best done at the server, but if you don't have that option then take a look at spamassassin which can integrate with some mail clients. Which mail client do you use?

Not needing something and not having it are two different things. Why does it seem that the Linux community in general think that they're so invincible? It makes me wonder if they lock thier doors...

I'm still new to the OS and, yet, even I know that there are over 100 viruses out there for it. If there's nothing available, that's truly a shame but there's little that I can do about it. On the other hand, if it's available and people choose not to use it, that's just plain foolhardy.

I don't know about you, but most people have important data on their computers and would be horrified if it was compromised!

As for server spam filtering, you're right... I don't have a server in my home. I'll look into SpamAssassin. My client of choice is Thunderbird, the Kubuntu comes with a new one that I'm going to try. Hopefully, SA will integrate with it.
