ubuntu not booting up

ubuntu won't boot, at start-up selected ubuntu after about 2min get ubuntu logo which pulses bright white to grey/white
5min later logo clears replaced by a flashing underscore (top left of screen), 7mins later window fills with error messages.
have also followed instalation guide, still get above
i'm using win xp sp3
running on 1.98 GHz amd sempron, 1.0Gb ram can u help plz

There might be some thing wrong with the your CD, so I would suggest
to try to get another one. Another thing you can do is that you can
try the same CD again.

this did not solve my problem,
had to go this way:-
alternative download options:- Ubuntu installer for windows:- now selected location:-
begin download.
NB you need to have a pre-recorded copy in the disc player not 9.10 or if will just try to install from the disc
