keyboard layout changed from english uk to english us in Ubuntu 14.04

Asked by Phil Batley

For some reason some of my keyboard characters are suddenly in the wrong place, for example when I want a pound symbol I get #, speech marks " give me @ and that kind of thing. I'm using a Compaq lap top bought in the UK and until recently had no problems. It runs windows 8 but I set it up to run Linux - it can dual boot but I doubt that is relevant. It appears it's converted itself to a US layout in Linux, even though it's showing as English UK. Have googled for answers and tried some suggestions but still have the same problem even after restarting my pc. Any suggestions would be most welcome, bearing in mind I'm a bit of a computer novice. I can copy & paste things into terminal for read outs, installation and cures but I soon get lost when folk talk tehnical! Thanks.

There is a known problem, that in some cases the keyboard layout gets randomly switched to US settings.
If this is the cause for your case, then the solution is to follow the steps in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ibus/+bug/1240198/comments/19

Hi Manfred. Thank you for your help. I tried your solution but the
correct box was already checked. I unchecked it then checked it again
but the problem remains. Do you have any other suggestions?

Does you computer always have the wrong setting, od does it randomly change from one to the other?
How many different layouts do you have defined in the system settings - keyboard dialogue?

Hi Manfred,

My computer always has the wrong setting, it has the US layout even
though it is showing it's set as UK. It changed on it's own about a
month ago and won't change to UK.

In settings I have the choice of English UK & English US under text
entry. I hope this answers your question.

Thanks again for your help.

If you change the settings from UK to US, close the settings dialogue, and then open it again and set it to UK, does that change the keyboard behavior?
Or as another try, remove the UK keyboard definition and add it again.

Have removed English (US) altogether and removed English (UK) then put
English (UK) back and it seems to have worked at last!

I'll see if it lasts, see if it randomly changes after restart etc and
let you know.

Thank you so much for your kindness and help, it's been driving me crazy!
