setting up HP printer

Asked by Steve Lathan

I have Ubuntu 8.04 and an HP Photosmart C4480 printer. While I can print, I can't use the Device Manager. I have downloaded and installed HPLIP 2.8.12 following instructions at the opensource site, although it says some missing GUI dependencies (Python 3 and 4) were still not acquired. I get to the "setup HP" step and nothing happens from there. What am I missing or doing wrong?

The HPLIP package is available in the Ubuntu repositories, and I think it is installed by default.

Open Synaptic and search for "hplip", then select the packages you want and install them.

Installing software from the repositories when possible is the best (and safest) way.

HPLIP 2.8.12 is needed for the latest printers and this version is not yet included in Synaptic.

I use 8.04 and a C5280 and have everything working (printer, scanner, photoprinter, CD printer, envelope printer). For HPLIP 2.8.12 I used the automatic installation. I also installed via Add/Remove the "HP Toolbox".

You might have to run the installer script again (hplip-2.8.12.run).

Guillermo,
Tried it, but got message saying some servers were not available.  Applied other packages, but still to no avail.

Now when running hp-setup, I get to the point of designating a printer.  When I do, I get a response saying there are other printers in the queue and I need a PDD.  How do I get rid of other printers in the queue and what the hell is a PDD?
                                                            thank you

Was able to run all programs successfully.  HP Device Manager still doesn't work, but I can print and that's the most important.

You should be able to scan as well. If you start XSane it should recognise the scanner of your multifunction device.

About the HPLIP Toolbox, you might have to install it again - it is in Add/Remove. After installation you will find it under Applications, Accessories.

Can you help with this problem?
