The question is kind of vague. Let's narrow things down a little.

If you open a terminal and type

ls

(that's ell-ess, both lowercase) and hit Enter, what do you see?

Hi,

Looks like someone answered your question a week ago:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=948315

Have you tried following Tamlynmac's suggestion?

I tried this. But when I entered "hplip-gui" it said "bash: hplip-gui:
command not found."

I get some variation of this no matter what I do. My computer was built by
people who are jam up on Windows but new to Ubuntu. I really feel that the
problem is in my computer, not HP or Ubuntu.

What would happen if I downloaded Ubuntu again. They did it at the shop and
also did the initial configuration, formatting and reading of chicken bones
etc. Might they have skipped a step or something.

This is my first experience with Linux based OS, and chose Ubuntu based on
what I had read. Now I wonder if Kubuntu might be a better fit. My
computing needs are simple: email, general browsing and spreadsheets and
word processing. If I do download Kubunu, and carefully follow install
prompts, might this fix my problems? Or should I just forget the printer
install, leave it installed on my wife's Windows machine and print from
that. Most of my spreadsheets and documents are done with Google Docs and
Spreadsheet so it is not a major deal to do it that way, but would really
like to be able to do it all from my office.

Hi Doug,

I understand your concerns. However, there is absolutely no need to give up just yet ;-) Besides, from what you wrote, I can see that Ubuntu can easily answer all your computing needs.

Let's try to get this solved one step at a time. We are luckily not in the Windows world here, so no need to do the reboot and/or reinstall dance routine.

If you just skip the hplip-gui step and look at the next suggestions in http://backports.ubuntuforums.com/showthread.php?t=942220

you will notice that "Ubuntiac" recommends trying the command hp-toolbox (after installing hplip and hplip-gui ). So please enter the following command in a Linux terminal:

hp-toolbox

This should launch a graphical HP printer setup tool.

Hope it helps,

Regards,

Mark

For some reason, no device is detected

CUPS recognizes my printer, almost every danged thing recognizes my printer,
but it will not print or scan. I have 40 test prints that it says are
completed, but not one tree has given its life for this experiment (or in
plain language, nothing printed, not one page) Giving up is becoming a more
desirable option
