No new printer icon, cannot connect to IP

Asked by Scott Evans

Hello. I just installed Ubuntu for the first time (version 10.04, 64 bit). I tried to install a network printer but was not able to. When I go to Printing under System, there is no New Printer icon displayed as stated in the documentation. Also in the menu under New, the printer option is grayed out and cannot be chosen.

When I try to connect to the printer (using the menu under server), I enter the IP address (172.25.25.etc.) and it fails to connect.

This is an HP P2015dn LaserJet printer. I went to the HP website and followed the instructions for 'automatically' installing the HPLIP in a terminal window. Everything went as described (http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html), and the HP Device Manager did show up in Applications. I used it to find the printer and choose the P2015dn driver. Yet STILL it did not show up in the Ubuntu Printing window under System. And what is REALLY weird is that after restart the HP Device Manager DISAPPEARED from the Applications menu and I can no longer access it!

Please help, I would think this should not be this hard. What's up with no New Printer icon?!?

Can you ping the IP?

Sorry I have not updated this post. I could ping the IP address successfully even when the problem occurred.

Eventually, after a couple reboots, the HP Manager reappeared in the status panel (upper right). I also found that it was listed in the startup programs and checked). Pretty strange disappearing act. In general Ubuntu 10.04, 64bit has done these odd things once in a while (at one startup for example it would not allow me to un-mute the sound). It seems to have gotten more stable over time and these things do not seem to happen anymore. There were some updates, so maybe this helped.

In any case, I noticed that the "ADD" button in the printer utility was now available and I was able to add the printers using their IP addresses. The HP Manager would display that jobs were sent and their status in a small notification window. So this problem appears to be fixed (or has fixed itself?). There was never a New Printer icon, so this should be removed from the support page.

Thanks!
