Ubuntu Booting Error: No Such Device After 9.10 Installation

Asked by noviceuser

Hi,

I know very little about how to use Ubuntu, but I wanted to use it as my OS. After installing 9.10 without any issues and restarting my computer, I received an error message associated with grub saying: "Error: No Such Device" followed by a line of alphanumeric characters.

I know that this is the same problem that is listed on these pages:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+question/89343
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1321712
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1322223
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/403408

As a new user of Ubuntu coming from Windows, I'm a little lost with the command lines associated with sudo and grub that are suggested in those threads. Can somebody please provided detailed step by step assistance on what I need to do (i.e. what i need to enter and where?) so that I can boot 9.10 from my hard drive?

Thank you for your help.

Just wanted to add that I just found this site with the sort of step by step help I am asking for:

http://www.homeless.elementfx.com/blog/2009/10/29/fix-ubuntu-9-10-dual-boot-no-such-device-error/

but I am unsure of what to do at the end when it tells you "press enter a bunch of times". Nothing happens for me and the changes are not saved in Terminal. As well, when I enter "sudo aptitude update" it asks me for my user password, but it doesn't allow me to enter any keystrokes until I press enter and when I do enter the password, it says that it isn't correct...

I won't directly answer your problem (I'm still researching it) but I can tell you about "sudo aptitute update" problem.

sudo is application which is short for "super Do" or Super User Do". It asks for your user password but it will not show anything... for security reason. You say that it doesn't allow you to enter your password, but it is really working... just not giving you any feedback. Just enter your password (even if nothing seems to be happening) and it will work.

Ok, that makes sense. Thank you for clarifying one of my problems

I'm going to once more try the steps outlined in:

http://www.homeless.elementfx.com/blog/2009/10/29/fix-ubuntu-9-10-dual-boot-no-such-device-error/

to see if it works. I'm still not too sure about how to save the changes with just pressing enter....

Thank you for researching the issue, too. :)

I'm still experiencing the same error with Ubuntu 9.10 not loading even after falling the steps above and adding Ctrl O to save the changes in file /usr/lib/grub/grub-mkconfig_lib

Ok, I reviewed the guide again along with some assistance from:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/403408

and realized the mistake I had made.

I can finally boot Ubuntu 9.10. :D

Now off to figure out how to make all my drivers work. Thank you for the help Ve2dmn and Vikram.
