Windows 7 Not Booting

Asked by Michael

My computer came with Windows 7 installed on it. I wanted to try Ubuntu, so I installed it alongside Windows 7 and everything was fine. I needed more space on my Windows 7 partition, so I deleted the Ubuntu partition from the hard drive. When I went to restart I got a blank screen. I reinstalled Ubuntu allongside Windows 7 and was able to restart and boot Windows. The next day I got the same blank screen, so I reinstalled Ubuntu over Ubuntu, leaving the Windows 7 partition alone. After that, when I try to boot Windows 7 it keeps sending me back to the select an OS page.

My Windows 7 system restore disk said that everything was fine, although I still can't boot Windows 7. I do not have a system restore iso file and have not backed up my files recently. Is there any way I can get onto Windows 7?

If you need more detail please ask. Thanks in avance!

If you run it all as one command it's a lot easier for you, rather than breaking it up.

There is a Windows boot detected, if you hold SHIFT at boot, do you see the Windows boot option?

I will try now.

Thanks for the advice.

I held SHIFT and nothing different happened.

The Windows boot option has always been there, but it doesn't work.

I have discovered what the problem is but have not found how to fix it.

I left Windows 7 running overnight and it went into hibernation mode. When trying to access the Windows 7 partition I got this error:

"Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 14: Windows is hibernated, refused to mount."

It instructed me to type " Mount -t ntfs-3g-o remove_hiberfile /dev/sda3/media/OS " (without the quotes)

There were two problems I noticed with this.

1) The command didn't work, it replied: " mount: only root can do that "
2) The origional boot screen has Windows 7 on /dev/sda2 not on /dev/sda3

Might the command need to be changed to say "Mount -t ntfs-3g-o remove_hiberfile /dev/sda2/media/OS " or the boot screen need to be changed to say that Windows 7 is on /dev/sda3?

Does this help at all?

I have tried my two ideas of changing the mount command and changing the boot command and neither of them work.

Does anyone know how to have "root" mount the device to remove the hibernate from windows?
