p55 fake raid0

Asked by gurqn

Here we go ,

I have p55 mobo and able to install ubuntu to fake raid0 until GRUB always failing.

Fedora 16 desktop edition works like a charm with fake raid so I'm curious why ubuntu not able to complete that out-of-box for such a modern hardwares , please do not advise to use soft raid.

Question is too technical for me and should be reported as a bug, what you did.
I can only advise you to make a dedicated partition of 1GB for /boot, outside of RAID.
In fact, I could have a look. Could you run on both Ubuntu and Fedora the script
 http://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/ , paste both results in http://paste.ubuntu.com

Hello delance ,

Thank you for kind support and your time , i am currently not able try /boot partition outside of raid array but also I noticed something while installing fedora which is ;

Fedora using mdraid package instead of ubuntu's dmraid on installer. Fedora creating 500 mb of boot partition on raid array also using lvm and using free space and successfully installing grub2, while ubuntu and ubuntu based other distros always trying to install /dev/sda instead of for example for me /dev/dm-04 (fake raid 0 part) i think there is definately problem with installer how handle raid arrays on fakeraid. Also i tried and installed grub2 on mbr with other solution but when i select to ubuntu on list cant boot black screen after several seconds, but booting win7.

What I tried ;

Installed ubuntu then when i get a grub install failed messeage then selected continue without bootloader.

Started with live cd again and checked how ubuntu adressed my disks with disk utulity.

/dev/dm-0 which is whole raid array not a / root partition.

Opened terminal and ;

Sudo mount /dev/dm-0 /mnt
Sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
Sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
Sudo mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys

Chroot /mnt
Dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc
Just selected /dev/dm-0 on screen instructions which asking for where to install grub.

Win loader gone and grub appeared

Booting win okay
Booting ubuntu not okay ,hdds reading for a while like a booting but then black screen appear.

Then I gave up because OSes should make life easier for people i spend qutie good time but ubuntu fake raid like pain ..

Thanks for the answer and time , i hope my feedback help community too.

from what i've read, ubuntu doesn't fully support fake raid.

Ubuntu strictly speaking manages RAID as kernel manage it, independently of distribution.
It's else the current version of Grub2 or the way Ubiquity (the Ubuntu installer) which badly configure Grub2. And Ubiquity is known to have some issues in configuring Grub2 (about drive naming).
So it is interesting to know which version of Grub2 both distros use.

Also beware they have anaconda installer and may be there is no problem at all with grub dunno could be installer problem too
