Upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 system will not boot

Asked by Glenn Rhoads

I upgraded my system form 9.04 to 9.10. now my computer will not boot to the log in screen. I go to the kernel list and can't seem to find the solution. If I don't hit ESC to the grub menu this is what I get."init: unreadahead main process (2774) terminated satus 5 mountall:/proc/self?mountinfo: no such file or directory
montall: root file system isn't mounted
init : mountall main process (2775)terminated with status 1
general error mounting file systems
a maintenance shell will now be started
CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and re-try.
root@gPC3:~#
When I use the recovery kernel it flashes alot of lines and the curser end up at the bottom. Then I get:
Alert /dev/disk/byuuid//dev/sda1 does not exist
busy box v1.1.3 (debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu 12) Built in shell (ash)
enter help for a list of built in commands
(initramfs)
Thanks

You boot the CD from BIOS. If you see the menu then you have gone too far.

I must be missing something. when I trun on the computer it goes to the screen that boots or you can hit ESC. It is already at 2 and counting down. Should the BIOS be before this screen? Or how do i get to it. I'm not very technical with computers. Thanks.

You will need to reinstall. Rolling back is not advised nor supported. Jaunty will only be given updates in the repos until October 2010 so you may want to consider a clean install of Lucid which is supported until April 2013, or Karmic which is supported until April 2011

Sure, if you have a Lucid install CD you could wipe all partitions and reinstall a clean OS. Make sure your backups are recent.

Ican only go to the BIos Screen. When I try to boot from the Cd it says it failed and is looking for a disk. I don't have a floppy drive. Can I do an install even though I can't get to the desk top? I appreciate your help.

Perhaps problem lies in Ubuntu 10.04, and it explains you have also problem with 10.04 Live CD.
Can you check with a 9.04 or 9.10 Ubuntu CD ?
What model of PC do you have ?

Please avoid to answer with previous message. It makes launchpad more difficult to read.
You can get ISO image at http://releases.ubuntu.com/9.10.

It's a resume for me:

Error : "general error mounting file systems" (not a Graphic Card problem)
Computer delivered with Ubuntu 8.04.
Glenn and gbuddy66 succeeded to upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04, but both failed with Ubuntu 9.10.

You can get ISO image at http://releases.ubuntu.com/9.10.
Can you try to boot on this CD, to check if kernel included in this 9.10 delivery handle properly your hardware ?
If you can boot on CD, use option "Try but don't install". Then open a terminal, type "sudo parted -l" (lowercase L, not 1 or pipe), and post result.
Try again to boot with Ubuntu 10.04 CD, and if it fails, confirm you get same error message. A wrong kernel in 9.10 could have been fixed in 10.04.

If we need to reinstall, do you have data to save ?

I tried to boot with both CDs and keep getting the same message and same result. I have nothing on the computer that if it was lost would be a problem. I think ath this point a reinstall would be the best bet. I just need to know how to do it can't boot to the desk top. Thanks,

Sorry, but if you can't boot on a Ubuntu Install CD, you can't install it.
You need to identify which is the least Ubuntu version on whom CD you can boot.
For what I understand, it's 9.04.

To don't waste time PLEASE BE SURE to made a good live install Ubuntu cd...

1) please download the 700 mb file http://releases.ubuntu.com/9.04/
To avoid download errors download the desired ubuntu iso install cd image using the torrent protocol.

- if you are using Windows please install a torrent client i suggest you http://deluge-torrent.org/
and download the iso using a .torrent link from here:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/9.04/ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent

2) PLEASE BE SURE TO CHECK the md5sum of downloaded file to be sure it have no error https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
Only if the md5sum number match with this: http://releases.ubuntu.com/9.04/MD5SUMS go to the next steps.

3) burn the iso image onto a cd at lower speed you can do and activate the data verify
