after installation of 10.04, it get the prompt "grub" and if can not do anything anymore .

Asked by JayAre

After I select to install Ubuntu 10.04 along with Window and it goes thru the installation process. After I reboot I select Ubuntu to reboot and then a few seconds later I get this on my screen

                                                     GNU GRUB verson 1.98-1ubuntu5

Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB
lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible
     device or file completions.

grub>

I tried the Demo first and it work fine and I like it, so I did the installation but the above is all I get. So I just have to
reboot to Windows.

Did you use Wubi or did you do a convenetional installation?

If a conventional installation, how did you do the partitioning? What options did you pick?

How many hard drives have you got in your PC?

Do you have internet access from your PC when you're booted from the LiveCD? If so, please boot again from the LiveCD, then open a terminal command window (Applications->Accesories->Terminal), then enter the following command:

sudo fdisk -lu >~/Desktop/partitions.txt

A text file will appear on your desktop. Please copy the contents and paste them back here.

I do not know what Wubi is. I just created the DVD from the Ubuntu site "download". As stated on my original question, I re-boot from this DVD. I goes thru the installation process and then display the text that is on the original addressed problem. So I can not open a command window.

Might be your Ubuntu live install cd is not perfect or it can't be read from your cdrom drive please verify it...

Here some general note and howto:

The main ubuntu site is this: www.ubuntu.com and the download location is this
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Prerequisites: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements
Please also be sure to read the release notes: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes

1) please download the 700 mb file http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download simply press on download button
To avoid download errors please prefer to download the desired ubuntu iso install cd image using the torrent protocol.
2) check the md5sum of downloaded file to be sure it have no error https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

Only if the md5sum number match with this: http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/MD5SUMS go to the next steps otherwise
install a torrent client i suggest you http://deluge-torrent.org/ if you are using Windows and download the iso using a .torrent link from here:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent

3) burn the iso file onto a cd to do it install and use http://infrarecorder.org/?page_id=5
4) insert the self made install cd into your pc cdrom drive and reboot your pc. You must not see Windows starting and you can try Ubuntu from cdrom and then install it

If you have trouble with installation (the system freeze or you can't complete it) be sure to read the above suggestions, then:

1.a ) Please boot entirely (you must not see windows starting) from Ubuntu live install cd and when the system start to boot from cd you will see two bottom screen icons (keyboard and man inside circle ) please press space (choose your desired language) then a screen textual center menu will appear to you with this items in it:

Try Ubuntu without installing
Install Ubuntu
Check disc for defects
Test memory
Boot from first hard disk

Please select "Check disc for defects" and press enter to test if your cd-driver can read in a good way the live install cd... or if the install cd have some defective file in it.
Then please also perform a Test memory to be sure your pc RAM memory have not any issue

Ask new question if you have trouble installing or if you have any doubt.

Hope this helps

no, problem was not solved.

Thanks, I got further along. It went thru the whole installation, until I was told to reboot, which I did and then I got screen full of similar statements like the following.
[7979.875106 end_request: I/D error, dev sr1, sector 500840]
    | | | |
same different same different

I pressed 'Enter' and displayed " * will now restart"

but then this came on screen:
error: no such device: 8ae240a8-f845-4ad3-93ca-6b5d31d877a5.

That is highly suggestive of hard drive problems/defects...

Can you please boot from the LiveCD, then click on "System"->"Administration"->"Disk Utility"

Then click on your hard disk in the list of displayed drives. This will display data about your hard disk and what's on it, as well as its health. Of specific interest is what it reports next to "SMART status". Please report that back here.

Also, click on the "Smart Data" button (middle on the right), and review the Attributes listed. Please report problem items (non-green.)

You might also want to click on "Run self-test" and report what is found. (I'd suggest doing the Extended test.)

The hard drives were fine. I had XP on. Everything had gone fine in the installation process as adviced earlier, even pressing "space bar" on the little "keyboard" and little "dude". If you will check my previous mentioned problems, I could not get to the "menu".

Hi, just because you had XP on before does not mean you can't have developed problems since, or that you didn't have them even while you had XP on.

Now, you say above that the hard drives were [are?] fine, does this mean you've run the diagnostics and they check out fine? (The installation process appearing to succeed is not sufficient as a test to ensure your disks are without problems.)

As an aside, I did read your previous post, it's the output that you paraphrased that led me to conclude you may [now] have disk issues you may not be aware of...

I have replaced the hard drive with another and I will run the re-installation. Hope all goes well, if not, well I'll be back. Thanks
