After installing 8.10, Get Error: (error loading operating system).

Asked by Jim Dodd

Good afternoon,

The problem that I am having is not in the instalation, It runs smoothly.

When I reboot 8.10 after instalation I get an error that states:
(error loading operating system). Boot Process stops dead.

I use a removable drive bay that is attached to the primary IDE chanel.

I install different operating systems on individual hard drives that I can
remove. (Windows XP Pro, Windows 2000 pro, Windows Vista Ultimate.

I have Ubuntu 8.0.4.1 installed on a 200 gig Seagate that works great.

I change hard drives to change Operating systems, instead of using
the dual bood method.

I have read most of the troubleshooting tips at your site.

Thanks in advance,

Jim Dodd

Please set/put the Installed Ubuntu 8.10 drive as primary master and boot from Ubuntu install cd..
Mount the installed Ubuntu 8.10 partition...
Then open a terminal copy and paste the /your_ubuntu_8.10_mount_point/boot/grub/menu.list file contents here.

Thank you

Good morning,

I setup the Installed Ubuntu 8.10 drive as primary master, and booted the
Ubuntu install cd.
I mounted the Installed Drive.

See attached screen shot of what I saw.
I don't know how to open a terminal or find what you are describing.

Thanks,

Jim Dodd

Good morning,

I have recently figured out what was happening during installation.

I use a removable drive bay that is attached to the primary IDE channel.

I install different operating systems on individual hard drives that I can

change out. (Windows XP Pro, Windows 2000 pro, Windows Vista Ultimate).

In addition I have four other hard drives in my computer that are used for

Specific purposes.

During installation the boot loader was getting installed to the wrong
drive.

I found the advanced scheme and directed it to install to the proper drive.

It works great. Ubuntu now works as well as any Windows System that

I have been using.

Thanks,

Jim Dodd
