GRUB error 17 after install 7.10

Asked by tadiv

Okay -- REALLY I started with GRUB error 2 and saw various answers that talked about the drive's DMA mode - so I went into BIOS and changed the USB configuration (the drive I'm trying to install Ubuntu to is a WD "mybook" 500GB USB 2.0 drive) and changed the "AUTO" setting to a "HARDDISK" setting (ASUS MB)... re-installed Ubuntu (since after the GRUB error 2 I ran fixmbr be be sure I had not lost my Win XP system - I had not) and now I get the GRUB error 17...

As an aside - this should not be so stinking hard...

Any ideas on how to make this machine work?

Thanks,
Tom

Okay -- this is fixed -- here was the issue -- as noted in another question ( https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/19563 ) -- this PC has two 250 GB SATA drives in a 2+0 RAID configuration in Windows. Ubuntu or more likely, GRUB sees these as two drives as opposed to a single drive. I disabled the controller in BIOS so that these drives are not available in Windows or Ubuntu - re-installed (though I probably could have done some fancy GRUB command) and all is working except this RAID drive...
