Ubuntu 7.10 install seems to be hanging

Asked by tadiv

The installer hangs at 15% - Detecting file systems... This PC has Windows XP Home, 1 GB ram, and I'm attempting to install onto a 500 GB "MyBook" USB drive...

Please be sure your Windows partition usually NTFS have no error on it.
Make a complete data + space hard disk check from Windows.

I ran chkdsk /F on each of the drives installed on this system - everything looked okay - I also ran the memory test on the Ubuntu CD -- no problem there either - the install still hangs at 15%...

I have 2 250 GB drives that are in a 2 + 0 RAID configuration in windows to form a singlr 500GB drive - the partition utility in the Ubuntu installer seems to see them as 2 separate drives - this may be the issue - I'm not sure how to get around this...

I disabled the RAID controller in BIOS - the two drives no longer show up, but the installer still seems to hang at 15%...

if you have a partitioning tool in windows you're familiar with, i would go ahead and shrink ntfs first. with your partition tool, leave as unallocated or quick format since you're going to wipe it anyway. then if it is possible to skip the scan it will make things a little easier. also, youu might want to check if yoou need to start off the install with a certain something disabled. for example, on my laptop at the prompt when the cd boots, i type -noapic nolapic (likely different from your machine).

also, did you check the md5sum?

Do you mean the md5sum on the Ubuntu cd? No, but I did run the utility to check for errors...

If I understand your suggestion, the "MyBook" drive should have an unallocated partition... I'll try that.

I used the Windows XP Disk Manager to remove the ntfs partition and leave the drive unallocated - that worked!
