mounting hard drive because of disfunctional wiindows

Asked by sutherland

I'm unable to boot windows because it has an error. So before I scrub the hard drive and get a true Ubuntu computer I'm using a live Ubuntu disk and I'm wondering if there is a way to get some files off of the hard drive. I don't understand much about this but i keep getting a message that says it was unable to mount 60.0 GB Media. Is there a way to do this?
Thank You.

there is a way to mount the harddisk from the live cd but it would be nice to see the error. try mounting it (to get the error) and when u get the error in a terminal give the command " dmesg | tail " (without the quotes) and paste the output here. probably the reason u cant mount it, is because the computer was not properly shutdown and the file system remained open

You will probably have to manually mount the drive, and possible use the force option. To get better help on what command actually needs to be use, please open a terminal from Applications-> Accessories-> Terminal and type

sudo fdisk -lu

(Note this is lowercase of SUDO FDISK -LU)

Please tell... the output of this command.

Thank you

Here's the Details when it says Cannot mount volume:

Unable to mount volume

Details
$LogFile indicates unclean shutdown (0, 0) Failed to mount '/dev/hdal': Operation not supported Mount is denied because NTFS is marked to be in use. Choose one action: Choice 1: If you have Windows then disconnect the external devices by?????????? clicking on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in the Windows??????????? taskbar then shutdown Windows cleanly. Choice 2: If you don't have Windows then you can use the 'force' option for???????? your own responsibility. For example type on the command line:???????????????? mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/hdal /media/disk -o force?????? Or add the option to the relevant row in the /etc/fstab file:????????????????????? /dev/hdal /media/disk ntfs-3g force 0 0

I don't understand what this means, but that's what it says.

Thank you,
